Women’s Basketball Set For Saturday Matchup at Rhode Island

The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team remains on the road to take on Atlantic 10 preseason favorite Rhode Island Saturday, Jan. 6. Tip is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Ryan Center.

OPENING TIP
The Bonnies could not overcome an early deficit Wednesday at Fordham, falling to the Rams 65-57 at Rose Hill Gym. Nadechka Laccen paced the Bonnies with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Taylor Napper also finished in double figures with 12 points to go with four rebounds while Payton Fields chipped in nine points in 21 minutes off the bench.

The Bonnies were able to make it a two-possession game with just over a minute to play following a Tianna Johnson three. The Rams, however, were able to stifle the Bonnies comeback with a pair of free throws to ice the contest.

ATLANTIC 10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior Dani Haskell earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors Tuesday afternoon after scoring a season-high 27 points in the Bonnies win over Loyola Chicago Dec. 30. She finished the contest 8-for-15 from the field, including four threes. Haskell also grabbed six rebounds, dished out a pair of assists and nabbed two steals.

Haskell has scored in double figures 10 times this season, including three 20-point performances. Her 27 points against Loyola Chicago were the most by a Bonnies player since Asianae Johnson scored 28 twice during the 2021-22 season.

A native of Franklinville, N.Y., Haskell leads the Bonnies and ranks eighth in the A-10 in scoring at 13.9 points per game. Haskell is shooting 87.8 percent from the free throw line, leading the Atlantic 10.

Haskell enters Saturday's contest 32 points shy of 1,000 for her career, sitting at 968 career points.

SATURDAYS ARE FOR THE BONNIES
The Bonnies are 4-2 in games on Saturday this season, earning wins in three out of their last four against Loyola Chicago, Youngstown State and Loyola (MD).

Four Bonnies are averaging double figures on Saturday's led by Dani Haskell at 16.5 points. Also in double figures are Nadechka Laccen (11.5 ppg), Isabellah Middleton (10.7) and Claire Cody (10.2).

As a team, the Brown and White are shooting 40.0 percent from the floor and 34.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Bonnies are +3.3 in rebounding on Saturday's and average 63.2 points per game.

RHODE ISLAND NOTES

  • Rhode Island enters Saturday 10-5 overall and 2-0 to begin Atlantic 10 play, winning four straight contests. The Rams kicked off conference play with wins over reigning A-10 Tournament champion Saint Louis as well as George Mason. Last season, Rhode Island went 26-7 and 14-2 in A-10 play, advancing to the third round of the WNIT before falling to Harvard. The Rams were picked to win the Atlantic 10 this season, receiving 12 first-place votes.
  • Tammi Reiss is in her fifth season as the head coach of the Rams, touting an 82-33 record in four-plus seasons in Kingston. She is a two-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, earning accolades in 2021 and 2023. Prior to Rhode Island, Reiss spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Syracuse, helping the Orange to four straight NCAA appearances.
  • The Rams are led by Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference First Team selection Maye Toure who is averaging 13.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Sophie Phillips (12.5 ppg) and Teisha Hyman (11.7 ppg) are also averaging double figures for the Rams.

SERIES HISTORY
The Bonnies and Rams are set to meet for the 59th time Saturday afternoon, marking the fourth longest running series in Bonnies program history. Bona's holds the edge in the all-time series, 33-25, but the Rams have won the previous five matchups. The Bonnies had won 14 straight over the Rams prior to the 2019-20 season.

The Brown and White are 12-16 all-time on the road taking on the Rams. The last time the Bonnies took down Rhode Island at the Ryan Center was Jan. 30, 2019 when Bona's won, 84-68, behind 24 points from Mckenna Maycock.

The Bonnies return home to host La Salle Wednesday, Jan. 10. Tip is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Reilly Center.
