Cold Second Half Limits Bonnies in Setback at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. — After an evenly matched first half, the St. Bonaventure women's basketball team fell to Rhode Island, 65-41 Saturday afternoon in the Ocean State. The Bonnies fall to 1-2 in Atlantic 10 play after being stifled in the second half by the reigning A-10 tournament champions.

The Rams (11-5, 3-0 A-10) jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the opening frame. A three from Claire Cody and a mid-range jumper from Isabellah Middleton put the Bonnies within five with 28 seconds to play in the quarter.

Rhody's Maye Toure made a buzzer-beating layup as URI had seven-point lead heading into the second quarter.

The Bonnies (4-10, 1-2 A-10) offense began to click in the second frame, as they went on a 9-0 run. Middleton, Kirah Dandridge, and Peyton Fields all recorded baskets during the burst, including six points off turnovers.

The Brown and White forced eight turnovers in the second quarter while Peyton Field recorded six points in the frame to head to the halftime break tied at 29.

Middleton led St. Bonaventure scorers in the first half with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.

The Rams defense was overbearing in the second half, though, holding the Bonnies to just 12 second-half points and a season-low 41, turning a tie game at the break into a convincing win for the hosts.

Middleton scored a second-chance layup to square things at 31 with nine minutes to play in the third before the Rams went on a game-changing 15-0 run.

Senior Taylor Napper opened fourth quarter scoring with a quick layup for the Bonnies to make it a 47-35 Rams lead.

Dani Haskell got her first points of the afternoon with seven minutes to play, but the Bonnies were unable to mount a comeback.

Middleton was the only Bonnie in double digits with 12 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks. Dandridge recorded four steals while Haskell posted four assists.
