Women's Soccer Secures 2-1 Atlantic 10 Victory Over Rhode Island

KINGSTON, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team secured their first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season Thursday evening at Rhode Island, beating the Rams, 2-1.

Freshman Torrie Grant-Clavijo and graduate student Thea Juul recorded the two goals for St. Bonaventure, while Chiara Gottinger made seven saves for Bona to secure three points on the road.

Rhode Island got on the board first, netting the opening score of the game in the third minute off the foot of Lauren MacDonald.

The Bonnies countered in the 16th minute with Grant-Clavijo recording her first collegiate goal.

The freshman took advantage of a defensive miscue from the Rams, sending a long shot past the Rhode Island keeper who had come off her line.

Senior Bona keeper Gottinger made six saves in the opening stanza to keep her squad tied going into the break.

Sophomore Lauren Westwood looked poised to give the Bonnies the lead in the 65th minute, but sent her shot over the crossbar.

Juul netted her second game-winner of the season for the Bonnies with 15 minutes to play, converting on a set piece opportunity inside the box. Juul sent a screaming shot inside the left post off the touch from Westwood.

The SBU defense fended off a couple of chances from the Rams in the waning minutes to post the 2-1 victory.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH DONNY GEORGE
"I'm incredibly proud of this team tonight. We prepared well, and the girls executed the game plan with purpose and intent. URI capitalized on a slip in our midfield, turning that chance into a goal, but we quickly found our rhythm and began to compete in every area of the field. Midway through the second half, Torrie leveled the game with a clever finish from distance."

"In the second half, our approach remained the same. We knew coming here we'd be under pressure, but the plan was to force them wide and limit their chances to shots from distance. After Thea's goal, the team showed incredible fight, battling fiercely to protect the lead. Now, we need to carry this momentum into Sunday's game against Fordham."
