Bonnies Tripped Up by Dayton, 2-1

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team fell to Dayton, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.

Dayton (7-2-3, 2-1-2 A-10) grabbed the early lead in the 10th minute when Andrew Armstrong controlled a ball in the box and found the back of the net.

The Bonnies (6-6-3, 2-2-2 A-10) were able to tie the contest in the 21st minute following a long throw in by Keegan Dawson. The ball was headed backwards by a Dayton defender and into the net for an own goal.

Bona's seemed to have netted the go-ahead goal late in the first half in the 38th minute, but Mattia Ferretti's chance was ruled a no goal following a VAR review, leading to a Dayton free kick.

In the final minute of the first half, the Flyers were threatening in the scoring area and Bo Drath stepped in front a shot to send the teams into halftime tied, 1-1.

Dayton retook the lead in the opening minutes of the second half when Hjalti Sigurdsson found the back of the net with a header off a corner kick.

The Bonnies had a chance to tie the game once against in the 55th minute after being awarded a penalty shot after a foul inside the box. Kenzo Brito's chance, however, was right at the Dayton goalkeeper who turned away the shot.

Will O'Connor tried his luck with time winding down in the contest, but his shot sailed high of the net as Dayton held on for the 2-1 victory.

Brito paced the Bonnies with three shots while Nicolas Pucci made a season-high seven saves in net.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH KWAME ODURO
"The game was there for us to get a result. Dayton is a very dangerous team coming forward. Being down a goal you must push forward a bit more and you leave yourself a bit more exposed to chances."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies head out on the road for the final time in 2024 Saturday, Oct. 26 when they travel to take on George Mason. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
