POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Braddock Damore carded a career-best round of 2-under 69 while grad student Peter Byrne matched his Bonnies low round of 3-under 68 to lead the Bonnies in a strong final 18 to close out the fall season Tuesday afternoon at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate held at Kilmarlic Golf Club.
Damore and junior Michael Bucko both posted 54-hole totals of 218 to tie for 25th out of the field of 72 players in the three-day tournament.
Bucko was steady throughout, producing an opening round 72 followed by matching scores of 73 the next two days. Damore, meanwhile, was solid on Sunday with 1-over 72 followed by 77 in the second round on Monday.
Tuesday, however, Damore shined as he birdied two par-4s in the first three holes before playing the next three holes in 3-over to move out of red figures. He got things going again with two more birdies on par-4s before making par and then sinking another bird on the par-5 ninth to go out in 33. Two more birdies came on back nine par-5s before draining his eighth and final birdie on the par-3 17th.
As a team, the Bonnies finished 12th out of 14 squads but enjoyed a bounce-back day across the board on Tuesday.
After logging scores of 300 and 306 the first two days, St. Bonaventure put together a strong round to go into the winter break on as the Bonnies closed at 284.
No Bonnie saw more improvement over the three days than grad captain Peter Byrne.
After a first round struggle of 83 on Sunday, Byrne was a much better 75 on Monday. In Tuesday's final round, Byrne put together one of the finest rounds of his collegiate career as he wrapped the week with 3-under 68.
The New Jersey native was 2-over at the turn but caught fire on the back nine as he delivered five birdies, carding one on four of the final five holes to finish the day with 31 on the homeward holes.
Also in the lineup for the Bonnies were junior Gabe Williams (76-82-74) and freshman Dante Bertoni (80-81-81).
St. Bonaventure is now off until March when the Bonnies return to official competition March 10-11 at the Ross Collegiate Classic at Mid-Pines Golf Club in North Carolina.
