ST. BONAVENTURE vs. ALFRED
Wednesday, Oct. 30 - 7:00 p.m.

TV: ESPN+
Radio: Bonnies Online Network / 100.1 FM The Hero

TIPPING OFF
  • The new-look St. Bonaventure men's basketball team returns to the Reilly Center when the Bonnies host Alfred in an exhibition contest Wednesday night.
  • St. Bonaventure and Alfred renew acquaintances in the annual season preview by meeting in exhibition action for the seventh time.
  • The Bonnies won last year's matchup, 80-41. Bona has played Alfred every year since 2016 except for 2020.
  • Wednesday's game will not count toward season results for either team.
  • Four returning members of the Bonnies roster played in last year's exhibition game vs. Alfred: Noel Brown played 17 minutes posting eight points and nine rebounds, Duane Thompson played 16 minutes grabbing four rebounds and nine points, Miles Rose played 11 minutes with two rebounds and four points, Broek Ostrom played seven minutes collecting four rebounds, Jack DeRose played three minutes.
A WHOLE NEW YEAR
  • The Bonnies reached the Atlantic 10 semifinals last year and won 20 games for the sixth time under head coach Mark Schmidt and the 18th time in program history.
  • The Bonnies are returning 209 points from four returners off last year's roster. A total of 202 of those points came from center Noel Brown in his first season with the program. Miles Rose saw time in one game and Broek Ostrom appeared in seven games. Duane Thompson redshirted last season.
  • Bonnies fans will want to grab a program this year to learn all the new names and numbers as many new faces are donning the Brown and White for the first time. That doesn't mean they come without experience, however.  The Bonnies will bring in 10 newcomers. Six of the new Bonnies players have previous Division I experience across seven D-I conferences: SEC, Missouri Valley, Big Ten, Big Sky, Mountain West, WAC and NEC. Bona's roster boasts a combined 26 seasons of collegiate experience altogether.
  • Teammates voted Noel Brown and Melvin Council Jr. as the team captains and the senior duo will serve as team leaders this season.
  • Among returners, only Brown saw extensive minutes last year and he turned in a career year after three previous seasons in the Atlantic 10. After transferring from George Washington where he played the first three seasons of his collegiate career, Brown averaged no higher than 3.0 ppg prior to donning the Bonnies colors. In his first year with the Bonnies, Brown averaged 6.1 ppg with 36 offensive rebounds. For the season, he has connected on over 71 percent of his field goal attempts. At GW, Brown averaged 11.4 mpg; in his first season with the Bonnies he averaged 13.9 minutes.
FAMILY TIES
Bonnies graduate assistant Mike Schmidt is a former Alfred basketball player.  In three exhibition games vs. the Bonnies, Schmidt scored 22 points with 10 assists.

Alfred's brother duo of Tyler and Casey Curran practically grew up on the Reilly Center arena floor. The Currans are the sons of Steve Curran, Bona's longtime assistant coach who moved to the staff of George Mason last year. Tyler spent a redshirt year at St. Bonaventure two seasons ago before moving to Alfred last year.

ABOUT ALFRED
The Saxons finished last season 12-15 overall and return 15 players off last year's roster. Head coach Erich Kaempffe is in his fourth season. Franlys Valenzuela ranked ninth among all Division III players nationally on the boards with 11.7 rebounds per game and the most by an Alfred player since 1958-59.

Tyler Curran was a two-time Empire 8 Player of the Week and started all 28 games a season ago.
