Bonnies Lead Wire-to-Wire in 15-13 Victory Over Bucknell

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team successfully protected home turf Wednesday afternoon against Bucknell, taking the home lid lifter 15-13. Hat tricks from sophomores Megan Schillinger and Brooke Piper boosted the Bonnies to their first win of the year.

The Bonnies (1-1) controlled from whistle-to-whistle thanks to a hot start.

Bona led 3-0 just six minutes into the game courtesy of Kassi Hogan, Jessica Notaro, and Callie Kessler. Fiona McGovern assisted on the first and third goals for Bona, tallying three assists in total.

Bucknell (0-3) got one back at the 7:47 mark before SBU went off for three more in the opening stanza. Schillinger netted her first of the year before going on to score two more in what was her first career hat trick.

Junior Tori Nascimento and Piper followed suit to give the Bonnies a 6-2 advantage after one.

The second quarter was a back-and-forth battle with Bucknell striking first at 11:36. Piper scored her second and third of the day around a Bison goal from Allie Boyce before Rylee Gonzalez netted her first goal for the Brown and White. The Bison found the net one more time as the clock winded down in the opening half, but St. Bonaventure had the advantage 9-6 at the break.

Piper, who had six points on five goals and an assist in the season opener, continued her momentum with the second hat trick of the day for Bonaventure.

The Bonnies stretched their lead to five in the third quarter, outscoring Bucknell 4-2 in the period. Schillinger converted on the free position attempt while Grace Hollenbeck netted her first of the game. Nascimento and Notaro posted their second goals of the day finding their way to the net unassisted.

Bucknell tried to muster a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring four unanswered, but McGovern found Hogan with 4:16 left to give Bona a three-goal cushion. Brooke Piper won the draw after the goal, but the Bonnies came up empty-handed, giving the Bison the ball with just over three minutes left.

Megan Krestinski pulled the Bison within two by scoring at 2:44, but the Bonnies soiled the rally attempt as Piper came away with the ensuing draw and Bucknell would never get closer.
