McGovern's Five Goals Not Enough as Aggies Beat Women's Lacrosse

DAVIS, Ca. — The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team dropped the first contest of a two-game trip to California Tuesday evening as UC Davis outscored the Bonnies, 13-9. Fiona McGovern had a standout effort with five goals and six points on the night for SBU.

Despite a quick score from Bona's senior Kassi Hogan, the Aggies were able to extend their lead out to 5-2 after one quarter.

Sophomore Brooke Piper had the second of the opening frame for the Bonnies to make it a 2-2 game with nine minutes left.

Freshman Katelyn Hicks took over duties in the cage from Ashley Herrick at the start of the second. Hicks made four saves on the day.

In the second quarter, Fiona McGovern netted her first of the day to make the Aggies lead 6-3.

Abby Hiltz recorded her first goal of the year at the 7:01 mark as she caught a pass from McGovern and slotted it home.

Going into the halftime break, the Bonnies trailed 9-5.

Both defenses were solid in the third frame as the quarter saw only two goals. The Aggies netted both scores during the period to extend their lead to 11-5.

McGovern ended the Bona's scoreless draught at 11:57 in the fourth for her third of the day. That is the first hat trick of the season for the junior following one of the best scoring performances in Bonaventure history in 2023.

Following a quick response from the Aggies, Piper netted her second of the day. Piper has had scored at least two goal in all of the Bonnies first four games.

McGovern registered two goals in a row to make it 12-9 Aggies with three minutes to play.

Freshman Jordan Murrell won the draw for the Bonnies (1-3), but a turnover allowed the Aggies (4-1) to get the ball back and run out the remaining time on the clock.

The Bonnies are back in action Thursday at California. That contest is scheduled for a 5 p.m. EST first draw.
