AMHERST, Mass. – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team fell to Massachusetts, 58-45, Wednesday evening at the Mullins Center.
Isabellah Middleton paced the Bonnies with 16 points and eight rebounds while Payton Fields added 14 points and five boards.
Massachusetts (4-26, 2-16 A-10) grabbed an early advantage, pulling out of an 8-2 lead midway through the first.
The Minutewomen used a 7-0 run to take an 11-point lead nearing the end of the first, but five straight points from Fields pulled the Bonnies within eight after one, 17-9.
UMass kept its pace in the second, opening up a 14-point advantage following back-to-back baskets form Alexsia Rose.
The Bonnies (4-24, 1-16 A-10) used a 7-0 run of their own after the media timeout of the second to cut the deficit back to single digits, 28-21, but Rose closed the half with a layup of her own, pushing the hosts lead back to nine at the break.
Coming out of halftime, Nadechka Laccen cut the UMass lead to five, 32-27.
Massachusetts, however, responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to take a 38-27 advantage.
The Bonnies ended the third on a 5-0 run with baskets from Claire Cody and Fields, bringing the score to, 41-34, with 10 minutes to play.
Bona's was able to make it a two-point game after a pair of Middleton free throws, but UMass went on a 10-0 run to retake a double-digit lead with 3:03 remaining in the contest.
Middleton's basket with 1:08 to play brought the Bonnies within 13, but that is the closest the Bonnies would as the Minutewomen ran out the clock, earning the victory.
The Bonnies wrap up the regular season Saturday, March 2 at the Reilly Center when they host Richmond. Tip is slated for 1:00 p.m.
