McGovern Scores Five; Griffins Sneak Past Women's Lacrosse

BUFFALO —The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team dropped a close 9-8 battle with Little Three rival Canisius to end their three-game winning streak Wednesday evening.

Fiona McGovern had her second five-goal game of the season and her second six-point game of 2024. The junior is up to 114 career points and is just one behind current head coach LeighAnn Stauffer (15th) on the Bonnies all-time scoring list.

In what turned out to be a low-scoring affair, the Golden Griffins (6-1) raced out to a 2-0 lead in the first minute and a half before the Bonnies came storming back, going on a 4-0 run.

Jessica Notaro got St. Bonaventure (4-4) on the board after Brooke Piper won the first draw control of the evening for SBU. Piper finished with a game-high five draw controls.

McGovern got her first point of the night when she fed senior Abby Hiltz in front of the net at the 11:08 mark, evening the score at two.

The next two came off the stick of McGovern with Hiltz giving the helper at 7:07 and McGovern taking it on her own just over a minute later for a Bona's two-goal lead.

Canisius got one back before the end of the quarter and scored the next three goals spanning the entire second and third quarters.

Ashley Herrick never let the Canisius lead build to more than two, making 10 saves in the game for St. Bonaventure and recording a .526 save percentage. Herrick now has five games with double-digit saves and five with a save percentage of .500 or better.

The quiet Bonnies offense found their rhythm again about five minutes into the fourth when Grace Hollenbeck netted a long shot from the top of the eight-meter arc.

McGovern tied the game at six before converting on a free position shot and giving Bona the lead with 6:13 to play.

The Griffs shifted the momentum in their favor scoring three in a row and regaining a two-goal lead.

Out of a Bonnies timeout, McGovern scored her fifth of the day, but the draw control was won by Canisius, sealing the rivalry victory for the Golden Griffins.
