PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Five different Bonnies had three or more goals as the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team cruised to a 17-7 victory over La Salle Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia.
The win marks the Bonnies first 2-0 start in Atlantic 10 play since 2007.
Grace Hollenbeck,
Fiona McGovern,
Kassi Hogan,
Jessica Notaro, and
Brooke Piper all tallied hat tricks or better for the Bonnies as they took their largest victory over La Salle in program history.
Hollenbeck's four goals are a career-high for the sophomore while McGovern tallied her fourth game with five or more points this season.
With her five points today, McGovern passed current head coach
LeighAnn Stauffer on the Bonnies all-time points leaders list to take sole possession of 15th. The junior has 81 career goals and 38 career assists.
McGovern, coming off a five-goal performance against Canisius, got the Bonnies offense rolling quickly. The junior converted on a free position shot less than a minute in and then assisted on Hogan's first of the day.
Hogan and McGovern scored the next two for the Brown and White before Notaro and Piper got in on the action giving the Bonnies a 6-1 advantage after one.
Ashley Herrick and the Bona defense stood tall in the first and all game, allowing just three shots on goal in the period and 11 total in the game.
With 7:17 to play in the second, Hollenbeck scored her first of the day on a free position shot, juking her defender, and slipping the ball past the Explorer goalie.
McGovern and
Megan Schillinger both scored on their free position opportunities in the second quarter, and Notaro netted her second on a feed from
Rylee Gonzalez to give Bona's an 11-2 advantage at halftime.
Coming out of the break, Hollenbeck scored her second off an Explorers turnover.
Hogan completed her hat trick at 9:45 in the third with the helper from Notaro and extended the Bonaventure lead out to 11.
La Salle got one back before Hollenbeck responded with her third to set a new career-high.
The Explorers added two more before the end of the third quarter; however, Hollenbeck wasn't done just yet, scoring her fourth goal at the 12:27 mark in the fourth.
A pass from McGovern at 9:50 found Notaro in front of the cage, giving Bona a 16-5 lead.
Piper became the fifth Bonaventure player with three or more on the day as she scored the pass from
Tori Nascimento, and the Bonnies rode to the 17-7 win. Piper also had eight draw controls in the contest, the most by any SBU player this season.
