Marquette Wins Defensive Battle on Men's Lacrosse Senior Day

St. Bonaventure's Class of 2024: Cam Germain, Nick Porfilio, Connor Steria and Tage Hoeg.
Box Score ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Marquette used a 4-0 run over the final two minutes of the third quarter and opening two minutes of the fourth period to break open a defensive struggle and claim an 8-3 victory Saturday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.

The Golden Eagles (4-5) grabbed a 3-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes behind two goals from Carsen Brandt in the first five minutes of the competition before Bobby O'Grady found the back of the net with 1:20 left in the quarter.

From there, though, the Bonaventure defense locked in as Marquette would not score for nearly 30 minutes of game time.

Unfortunately for the Bonnies, offense would be extremely tough to come by on this frosty afternoon.

The Bonnies (1-6) were down just one at halftime as reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Jake Kucinski scored twice before halftime for his 15th and 16th goals of the season, first assisted by Kyle Pepper, then Patrick Shanahan handed out an assist with 59 seconds left before halftime.

A 3-2 score remained for nearly the entire third quarter before Luke Blanc started the game-changing run for the Golden Eagles with back-to-back goals inside two minutes to play in the penultimate period.

Will Foster then scored 32 seconds into the fourth and Devon Cowan struck with 13:24 remaining.

On this day where defense ruled, Marquette's 7-2 lead seemed nearly insurmountable and the visitors added insurance on the second of the day by Cowan with 8:26 to play.

Bonaventure finally broke its 30-plus minute dry spell with the 17th goal of the year from graduate student Kellen Pulera, but his score came at the final buzzer.

Marquette held a 34-29 edge in shots, but its 11-3 ownership of the faceoff dot proved huge.

Cristofero Cucciuffo made 12 saves in net for the Bonnies while Caleb Creasor earned the win for Marquette with 11 stops.

Following the game, the Bonnies honored four traditional seniors: Cam Germain, Nick Porfilio, Connor Steria and Tage Hoeg.

The Bonnies open Atlantic 10 play next Saturday by hosting league favorite Richmond at 1 p.m.
