ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y.—A second-half surge helped the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team to a 19-7 victory over Youngstown State Wednesday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Knotted at five after the first half, the Bonnies erupted for 14 second half scores.
Tori Nascimento and
Brooke Piper led the charge for the Bonnies offensively. Nascimento had her first career four-goal game and Piper had her fourth hat trick of the season.
With Wednesday's victory, the Bonnies have their first ever 5-0 start to the season at home in program history. Bona is now 7-5 overall, the best start to a campaign since the 2010 season when they had the same mark through the first 12 games.
St. Bonaventure (7-5) opened the game with a goal from sophomore
Rylee Gonzalez just over a minute into the game. The Syracuse, N.Y. native gathered the pass from
Abby Hiltz and snuck the ball through the keeper's legs to give Bona's the 1-0 lead.
YSU (0-11) responded quickly scoring three in a row before Piper converted on a free position shot for her 23
rd goal of the year.
Freshman
Katelyn Hicks entered the game for Bona's following YSU's second goal. Hicks' seven saves are her most in a game this season. The frosh also earned her first collegiate win.
Brit Colangelo got her first of three caused turnovers on the day with four minutes remaining in the first. She raced into the offensive zone, finding Nascimento who netted her eighth goal of the season.
Grace Hollenbeck added one more for Bona's before the end of the quarter to give them a 4-3 lead.
Nascimento had the only goal of the second for SBU creating her own scoring opportunity with 2:35 to play in the half.
After the break, the Brown and White scored seven unanswered goals spanning the entire third quarter and three minutes into the fourth.
Hollenbeck started the run, scoring on a free position shot.
Seniors Hiltz and
Kassi Hogan both scored twice in the third quarter while Gonzalez found twine for the second time in the game.
Going into the final 15 minutes the Bonnies owned a 12-5 advantage over the Penguins.
Junior
Fiona McGovern scored her first of the day to open the fourth quarter, rolling the ball past the YSU keeper.
The Penguins stopped the Bona scoring streak to make it 13-6 with 13 minutes to play, however, the Bonnies went on to score seven more before time expired.
Piper fired a rocket into the back of the net before McGovern converted on a free position shot for her 25
th goal of the season.
Nascimento scored less than a minute after McGovern before lending the helping hand to Piper for a 16-6 Bona lead with 9:13 to play.
Megan Schilling got in on the action, finding open space and sending a screaming shot into the back of the net.
Emma Hollenbeck added to the excitement, scoring her first collegiate goal.
Nascimento capped off the day for the Bonnies tallying her fourth goal of the day with 4:27 to play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- The Bonnies caused 11 turnovers. Colangelo had three while Piper contributed two.
- SBU outshot the Penguins 39 to 18.
- Schillinger collected seven of the Bonnies 19 draw controls on the day.
- Hogan picked up a team-high four groundballs.
