Women's Lacrosse Falls at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. — The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team fell to Richmond in their second Atlantic 10 road game of the year Saturday, 17-9.

Rylee Gonzalez and Callie Kessler each tallied a pair of goals for the Bonnies. Gonzalez now has three multi-goal games this season for the Brown and White while Kessler has two.

Richmond improves to 9-2 overall and 5-0 in Atlantic 10 play while the Bonnies now stand at 7-6, 3-2.

After allowing a Spiders goal inside the first minute of the game, the Bona defense turned up the pressure, causing five Richmond turnovers in the first seven minutes of the contest.

Brooke Cicoria was credited with a caused turnover at 10:53 in the first, leading to the Bonnies first score of the game from Gonzalez.  Fiona McGovern was credited with the assist, her 20th of the year.

Another Spider turnover, this time caused by Brit Colangelo, gave Gonzalez the time to find Abby Hiltz who gave the Bonnies a 2-1 lead seven minutes into the game.

After nine consecutive goals from Richmond, Fiona McGovern capitalized on a free position opportunity to get one back with 14 seconds to play in the first half.

Despite leading in draw controls eight to 7 and having fewer turnovers than the Spiders, Richmond took a 10-3 lead into the halftime break.

Out of the intermission, the Spiders scored quickly, however, the Bona defense would force seven Richmond turnovers in the period and outscore the Spiders 2-1 in the frame.

Gonzalez notched her second of the day and 10th goal on the year just under three minutes into the third. The sophomore picked up the groundball after a saved shot off the stick of McGovern and slotted it into the back of the net.

After a tough defensive battle through the next 11 minutes of play, Hiltz found Kessler who fired her shot past the Spiders keeper to cut the deficit to 11-5.

Kessler scored the first for Bona in the fourth quarter responding to a Richmond score two minutes prior to make it a 12-6 game.

After two saves from Herrick, Tori Nascimento got on the board for SBU on the feed from Grace Hollenbeck

Brooke Piper and Hollenbeck added to the Bonnies final tally before time expired.
