ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. —
Brooke Piper recorded her fifth game with three or more goals this season, but Saint Joseph's proved too much, taking a 17-6 win over the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team on Saturday. The Hawks handed St. Bonaventure its first home loss of the season following a 5-0 start to the year at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Saint Joseph's (8-5, 4-2 A-10) got off and running early, taking a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes of play.
The Bonnies got on the board with 2:39 remaining in the opening frame as
Grace Hollenbeck found
Tori Nascimento in front of the cage who slotted home her 13
th goal of the year.
The Hawks got one more in the first quarter and had a 5-1 advantage after 15 minutes of play.
Both teams came up empty on their first possessions of the second quarter with Bona goalie
Ashley Herrick and Hawks keeper Jorden Concordia making saves.
Saint Joe's struck first at the 6:44 mark to extend the lead to 6-1.
The Bonnies (7-7, 3-3 A-10) had a power play opportunity off the draw control but couldn't capitalize. After fending off four shots from the Hawks on the next possession, the Bonnies attempt at cage was saved by Concordia, who would come out with 13 stops on the day.
SJU tacked on another four minutes to play before senior
Kassi Hogan responded, burying the pass from
Jessica Notaro with under two minutes to play.
The Hawks got another back on a free position opportunity to send the game into the intermission with an 8-2 lead.
The Bonnies responded with two goals to start the third quarter off the sticks of
Abby Hiltz and Piper.
Hiltz netted a pass from
Megan Schillinger before Piper scored her first on a free position attempt to put the Bonnies down 8-4.
Herrick made four saves for Bona in the period, but Saint Joe's was able to get two back before the end of the third for a 10-4 lead with 15 minutes to play.
Saint Joe's kept the momentum in their favor with two more goals in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter.
After a green card on the Hawks, Piper fired a screaming shot into the back of the cage for her second of the day and 29
th of the year.
Bona's won the draw control following Piper's score, but Condordia came up with the save and pushed the ball down the field in transition for Lisa Ross, giving SJU a 13-5 lead with 10:56 to play.
Piper scored her third of the day not long after on a free position shot, but the Hawks would put any chance of a Bona rally at bay, scoring three more for a 10 goal advantage.
Rylee Gonzalez added the last goal for the Bonnies with 41 seconds left. Her 17
th goal of the year came from a free position shot.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Bona led on the draw with 14 to the Hawks 12. Megan Schillinger had a great day, winning seven for SBU.
- Ashley Herrick had her sixth game of the season with 10 or more saves. Her 13 saves today were the most the grad student has had against an A-10 opponent this season.
- The Bonnies held the Hawks to 3-of-11 on free position opportunities. Bona went 3-of-6 on the day.
UP NEXT
St. Bonaventure heads south the next two weekends to face George Mason and Davidson before ending the season at home on April 27 against VCU.
