OPENING TIP
- Just two games remain in the Atlantic 10 regular season and the Bonnies will finish the slate by traveling to George Washington Wednesday night before hosting Saint Louis on Saturday.
- Bona's path to a double bye could already be blocked off by the time Wednesday's game tips off. To reach the No. 4 spot in the standings, the Bonnies must win twice and receive two losses by VCU. The Rams were set to host Duquesne Tuesday night and travel to Dayton Friday.
- The Bonnies have guaranteed at worst a .500 record in A-10 play. SBU has produced a winning Atlantic 10 record in eight of the past nine years, averaging over 11 A-10 wins per year since 2014-15.
- Chad Venning is a strong candidate for Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors. Venning has scored in double figures in all but one A-10 game (six points at Duquesne Jan. 23) and 17 of the last 18 contests overall. During A-10 play, he ranks 8th among all conference players at 15.4 ppg, 8th in field goal percentage (53.8%) and 5th in blocks (1.9 bpg).
- The Bonnies have been something of a split personality this year: In their nine A-10 wins, SBU averages 83 ppg while shooting 51% overall and over 43% from the perimeter. In seven A-10 losses, the team posts just 62.4 ppg while shooting 38% overall and 30% from distance.
- St. Bonaventure head coach Mark Schmidt secured his 300th win with the Bonnies last time out as Bona knocked off Loyola Chicago. He previously became the school's all-time men's basketball wins leader in 2019 when he passed the 202 wins set by Larry Weise from 1961-73. Schmidt now joins an elite coaching group as only five other coaches have ever scored 300 wins while with an Atlantic 10 school: John Chaney (516), Phil Martelli (444), Chris Mooney (346), Gale Catlett (333) and Bona's graduate Jim Baron (315), who scored his wins both with St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island.
- Bonaventure will try to lock down another top-5 finish in the final A-10 regular season standings, controlling their own destiny to do so entering the last week of the season. The Bonnies have finished fifth or better in the A-10 ranks in seven of the previous eight seasons with last year's ninth-place standing being the lone outlier.
- Daryl Banks III is on this week's Atlantic 10 Weekly Honor Roll after scoring 26 points off the bench in last Tuesday's win over Loyola Chicago. Banks is the first Bonnies player to post 20+ points off the bench in multiple games during a season since Ray Blackburn did it twice during the 2008-09 season.
TRENDING NUMBERS
3 – St. Bonaventure has done a good job both shooting the trey and defending it this season. Among A-10 teams, the Bonnies entered this week second in 3-point percentage (37.2%) and also fourth in 3-point percentage defense (32.0%).
10 – A win Wednesday would again give the Bonnies double-digit Atlantic 10 victories this year. Bona had won 10+ A-10 games in eight straight seasons before finishing last year 8-10. It would be the 10th time a
Mark Schmidt-coached Bonnies team reached 10 A-10 wins in a season. Prior to Schmidt taking over in 2007-08, the Bonnies had posted 10 or more A-10 victories in a season just three times.
11 – The Bonnies are 11-1 this season when hitting 10 or more 3-pointers.
15 – St. Bonaventure handed Loyola Chicago its largest margin of defeat in an A-10 game this year last time out, beating the Ramblers by 15 (79-64). Loyola Chicago has lost just three times in A-10 games with the game at SBU being their only double-digit setback.
16-2 – Bona is 16-2 when winning the turnover battle this year.
18 – This season is the 10th time that a
Mark Schmidt Bonnies team has won at least 18 games in a campaign.
190 – St. Bonaventure has an active streak of 190 consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer made dating to Nov. 25, 2017. The last time Bona finished a game without a trey was the day before, a win over Maryland on a neutral court Nov. 24, 2017.
200 – Charles Pride recently surpassed 200 career 3-pointers (207). He joins
Daryl Banks III (249) in having more than 200 treys. Next up is
Moses Flowers (198).
300 – St. Bonaventure head coach
Mark Schmidt reached another career milestone Feb. 27 when he scored his 300th win with the program. Schmidt, who has 382 coaching wins overall, is Bona's all-time wins leader. Schmidt joins an elite coaching group as only five other coaches have scored 300 wins while with an Atlantic 10 school: John Chaney (516), Phil Martelli (444), Chris Mooney (347), Gale Catlett (333) and Jim Baron (315), who scored his wins both with St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island.
400 – Mika Adams-Woods surpassed 400 career assists during the win at UMass on Feb. 24. That total ranks fourth among all active Atlantic 10 players behind only Braden Norris of Loyola Chicago, James Bishop of GW and Jhamir Brickus of La Salle.
TRENDS & NOTABLES
- Charles Pride is one of 27 active Division I players with 900+ career rebounds. Only two active guards in the country - Baylor Schierman (Creighton) and Christian Ray (Delaware) - have more career rebounds than Pride.
- Pride has committed 17 turnovers this season in over 770 minutes of game action, ranking 40th nationally in turnover rate according to KenPom. He has committed multiple turnovers in a game just twice this year, that coming back-to-back at Fordham (3) and vs. Davidson in an overtime game (2) in mid-February.
- Moses Flowers filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists in the win over Loyola Chicago Feb. 27. He set a season high for boards in the win while his five steals tied a career-best and his four helpers also matched a season-high. Flowers has scored in double figures in three straight games, the first time he's done that as a starter this season and first at all since a five-game stretch off the bench Dec. 2-22 in non-conference play.
- The Bonnies moved to 3-8 when trailing at halftime as they scored their third win of the year when down at intermission with their victory at UMass Feb. 21. Bona trailed at half in both of their wins over the Minutemen this year.
- SBU is second among all A-10 teams in turnover margin for the year (+2.0), behind only first-place Richmond (+3.1).
- Chad Venning has 97 blocks the past two seasons with the Bonnies, already moving into the program's top-10 list. He currently stands tied for eighth in school history with Jerome Spellman, '96.
- Venning played in his 100th career game Feb. 21. In career game 101, he surpassed 1,000 points - over 800 of which have been scored in a Bonnies uniform.
- Venning posted his second double-double of the season vs. UMass (16 pts, 10 reb). It was his second effort of double-figure rebounding this year and the fourth double-double of his career.
- Venning is averaging over 17 points per game over Bona's last five contests.
- Noel Brown returns to George Washington where he played the first three seasons of his collegiate career. Brown averaged no higher than 3.0 ppg at GW, but has been a valuable piece of the Bonnies rotation this year, posting 6.0 ppg. Over the last five contests, Brown has expanded his influence by averaging over 8.0 ppg. For the season, he has connected on over 72% of his field goal attempts. Bona's season record is Osun Osunniyi's 61.5% in 2019-20, but the program record book minimum is 2.5 field goals made per game - Brown is currently at 2.2 FG/game.
- Daryl Banks III has 122 3-pointers as a Bonnie the past two years – that total ranks tied for 15th in program history with Kyle Lofton, '22. Banks has made 82 of those 3-pointers in games played at the Reilly Center.
- Banks will play in his 150th career game on Wednesday night, the most of any Bonnies player.
- Bona handled Loyola Chicago last time out despite Mika Adams-Woods having his lowest scoring output of the year, just two points. It was the first time he's suited up this year without a field goal. He's delivered double-digit points in 20 of 27 games. He has not finished in single digits in back-to-back games yet this season.
- Barry Evans had a career-high four blocks vs. Loyola Chicago.
ABOUT GEORGE WASHINGTON
- It has been a tough go for GW in their first year under the moniker of the "Revolutionaries" after changing their name for the 2023-24 academic year. GW started out A-10 play strong at 3-1 following wins at VCU and home vs. Davidson and George Mason. Since then, though, GW has dropped 12 straight games.
- James Bishop IV remains one of the A-10's top players, ranking third in the conference in points per game (18.0 ppg) and is also fourth in assists (4.3 apg). He powers an offense that stands second in the league at 77.4 ppg, but defensively the Revs rank last in the A-10 by surrendering over 78 ppg.
- Darren Buchanan (6.7 rpg) and Maximus Edwards (6.6) rpg) both are among the A-10's top 10 on the boards.
- Buchanan has been named A-10 Rookie of the Week four times this year and posted 21.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg in two games vs. UMass and La Salle last week. He registers over 15 ppg on average for the year and is third in the league in field goal percentage at nearly 55 percent.
