Bonnies Face Setback at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. — The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team fell to George Mason Saturday afternoon, 13-10.

Jessica Notaro led the way offensively for the Bonnies with three goals while Ashley Herrick made 10 saves in the cage for SBU.

The Bonnies (7-8, 3-4 A-10) and the Patriots went back-and-forth to start the game. The Patriots took a quick lead, scoring less than a minute into the game.

Bona's attacker Grace Hollenbeck responded to knot the game at one off the helper from Rylee Gonzalez before Mason's Kate Anders scored soon after.

SBU's scoring leader Fiona McGovern got her first of the day, charging to the cage and finishing on her own with nine minutes left in the opening quarter.

GMU (9-6, 3-4 A-10) finished off the quarter with a 4-2 lead.

Sophomore Brooke Piper took advantage of a power play opportunity for St. Bonaventure to open the second frame and make it a 4-3 Mason lead.

Following three empty possessions from the Bonnies, George Mason was able to regain their two goal lead with 7:23 remaining in the half.

Piper won the next draw for St. Bonaventure and Notaro cashed in on a free position opportunity to put the Bonnies back within one.

However, the Patriots responded with two back-to-back goals just over 10 seconds apart.

Senior Abby Hiltz gave the Bonnies one back out of the called timeout making it a two goal game with four minutes to play in the half.

Olivia Peeler won the following draw, but the Bonnies came up empty-handed with Mason goalie Megan Deehan making two consecutive saves.

The Patriots took the momentum into the intermission, scoring with just 22 seconds left on the clock.

Coming out of the break Mason took advantage of that spark, scoring three in a row and taking an 11-5 lead.

McGovern stopped the bleeding for Bona's, converting a free position shot with 10 minutes remaining in the quarter.

McGovern helped on the next goal, finding Hollenbeck in front of the cage after Brit Colangelo got the possession started on the other end with a caused turnover.

It was a 12-7 advantage for the Patriots heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

Piper capitalized on a Mason turnover to start the quarter and bring the deficit down to four once again.

The Bonnies found themselves down 13-8 after Mason's Shannon Tuozzo scored what would be their final goal of the game with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Patriots were able to drain six minutes off the clock before Notaro scored the Bonnies' ninth goal of the game off the feed from Kassi Hogan

After Mason won the draw, the Bonnies regained possession with 2:21 to play, down four goals.

Suffocating defense from the Patriots kept SBU off the board until there was under a minute to play when Notaro found the back of the net from distance.

The Patriots again were able to win the draw and run out the remaining time on the clock.
