OLEAN, N.Y. – Peter Byrne led the way for the St. Bonaventure golf team by tying for second with two strong rounds this weekend under difficult conditions at Bartlett Country Club as the Bonnies battled Colgate in a head-to-head match.
The Raiders claimed the team win, 560-577, paced by a sterling performance by Robbie Herzig who followed up his Saturday 69 with 7-under 63 for a winning total of 132 over 36 holes.
Colgate posted a 283 team total on Saturday and only got better Sunday by totaling 277. St. Bonaventure recorded team scores of 292 and 285.
Byrne put himself in position for medalist honors with an outstanding round of 1-under 69 on Saturday despite battling an often fierce wind, cold temperatures and an extremely wet course. He carded four birdies in his opening round including coming home with 3-under 32 on the back nine to tie Herzig and Kevin Hollomon for the top of the leaderboard.
Sunday brought even colder temperatures, but Byrne soldiered through with an even-par 70. His weekend total of 139 tied Hollomon for second on the individual leaderboard. Byrne carded five birdies and 27 pars on his scorecard for the weekend, doing his best work on the par 4s which he played in 2-under for the tournament.
Gabe Williams placed fourth with an effort of 73 on Saturday followed by a strong 71 on Sunday. He played even-par golf for the entirety of Sunday's round with just one blemish on his card, a bogey on the fourth hole.
Michael Bucko (73-74/147), Jude Cummings (78-71/149) and Lance Sininger (77-73/150) stood seventh through ninth on the leaderboard with both Cummings and Sininger showing big improvement in their Sunday rounds. Cummings made birdie on the par-4 17th on Sunday while Sininger birdied the par-4 10th.
Also in the lineup for the Bonnies was Caleb Decker (78-75/153).
Vinny Liguori (87-75/162) and Aidan Shaw (79-87/166) played as individuals for the Bonnies.
Next up is a trip to Florida where the Bonnies will warm up this coming week at the Atlantic 10 Championship. Tee times for the A-10 Championship tournament begin Friday at 7:30 a.m. on Orlando's Evermore Resort.
