ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Senior Adam Rankie set a new in-season Bonnies baseball hitting streak best in the past three decades by collecting a hit in his 20th consecutive game, but Richmond grabbed game one of an Atlantic 10 series at Handler Park Friday, 9-4.
Rankie singled to center on a 1-2 pitch to lead off the home half of the first to stretch his hitting streak to 20 straight games, breaking a tie with Jesse Bosnik who had a hit in 19 straight contests during the 2010 season.
Rankie now ties Randy Moley for the second-longest hitting streak in Bona's Division I era -Â Moley posted hits in the final four games of the 2007 campaign before starting with hits in the first 16 contests of the 2008 season. Bona's longest streak in its Division I era is 26 consecutive games by Mike Nayman in 1988.Â
By then, though, it was already 2-0 Spiders following an RBI hit by DJ Pacheco and a sacrifice fly from Jordan Jaffe.
Bona got a run back on a passed ball in the third, but left the potential tying run 90 feet away from home.
Richmond added on in the fifth, scoring twice for a 4-1 advantage, then added a run in the sixth and four in the seventh to break the game open.
Rankie added a second hit, an RBI smash off the second base bag, in the ninth and Jackson DeJohn singled in another while Kyle Caccamise had a sac fly, but it would not be enough to overcome the deficit.
Pacheco and Phil Bernstein had three hits apiece for Richmond (19-23, 8-5 A-10).
Alex Barger tossed two scoreless frames of relief while Luke Roggenburk worked the lion's share of innings on the hill (5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) for the Bonnies (14-22, 4-9).
The two teams are scheduled to rematch Saturday at noon, but will look for a window in a forecast including rain for much of the day. Follow @BonniesBaseball on X for schedule updates.
