ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Niagara snuck past St. Bonaventure, 4-3, in the non-conference finale for both teams Tuesday afternoon at Handler Park.
Niagara turned two walks into a run in the first inning. The Bonnies immediately answered for the tie when David Marshall doubled down the right field line, allowing Adam Rankie to go first to third before coming home on a throwing error from the Purple Eagles second baseman.
Nick Monie broke the tie in the fifth with a two-out single to left center, scoring two for a 3-1 lead.
That score remained until the sixth when Harrison Kaufman followed a Jack Putney single with a two-run bomb deep to left for his third homer of the year and a 3-3 tie.
The next homer went the way of the Purple Eagles as Kelly Corl just cleared the fence in left on an 0-2 pitch to put the visitors in front in the eighth.
Corl's homer would turn out to be the difference.
Kaufman went 3-for-4 while Marshall also posted two hits to lead the Bonnies offense.
Joel Connors threw two scoreless innings on the mound for Bona's, while Ryan O'Connell also registered four outs while allowing only one baserunner. Andrew Ayers (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB), Gabe Watts (4.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K) and Chase Playfair (0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K) all saw time on the hill as well.
Gavin Schrader had three hits for Niagara while Carter Fink picked up the win on the hill for the Purple Eagles (32-15).
St. Bonaventure (15-31) will finish the season by hosting Fordham in a three-game Atlantic 10 series beginning Thursday at noon.
