FAIRFAX, Va. – St. Bonaventure scored three new program records at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track Championships over the season's final weekend at George Mason.
Teams fought less than ideal conditions Saturday as early rains left for a wet track when competition got underway in the afternoon.
In the final event of the day, though, freshman William McCarthy finished 15th and broke his own school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase set last month by just over three seconds with his time of 9:40.62.
Sunday in the 5000 meters, three Bonnies set new personal best times in sloppy track conditions again, led by a new SBU record time recorded by junior Clay Peets.
Despite missing much of both the indoor and outdoor seasons due to injury, Peets finished the year on a strong note by shattering his own previous school 5K record posted at last year's A-10 Championships. He crossed the stripe in a time of 14:25.58 which is almost 16 seconds better than his previous mark to beat in the Bona's record book. Peets placed 12th overall in the A-10 title race out of 38 competitors.
Senior Zane Courtwright moved to second individually in the program record book for the 5K as well with a strong run of 14:52.95, crushing his previous PR of 15:18.21. Sophomore Aiden Scattergood turned in a big PR as well of 15:04.85, over five seconds better than his previous personal record and good for third in SBU individual history.
The 4x400 team of Christian Figueroa, Aidan Hurley, Kieran Ryan and Riley Dillon also set a new program record time of 3:25.59, five seconds better than any previous relay time in school history. Figueroa ran a split of 52.02, followed by Hurley's 51.02, Ryan's 51.76 and finally Dillon's 50.42.Â
Freshman Joshua Lopez narrowly missed a personal best in his A-10 Outdoor Championships debut on Saturday, clocking in at 1:57.20 to lead the team in the 800 meters which was just a hair off his .10 time a week earlier. Senior Kieran Ryan, meanwhile, capped his collegiate career with a mark of 2:00.17.
Scattergood paced the Bonnies in the 1500 at 4:03.66 while Courtwright (4:04.87) and Aiden Holt (4:11.84) also represented the team in the event.
