The St. Bonaventure men's track team enjoyed a busy weekend of competition with athletes competing both at the Colonial Relays at Williamsburg, Va. as well as at the Geneseo Early Season Invite.
Junior Christian Figueroa ran a Bonaventure record time of 22.43 in the 200 meters, shattering the previous top mark of 23.48 recorded by Riley Dillon last season and easily eclipsing his own previous PR of 23.90 from last year.
Figueroa gave himself a second new school record in the 400 as he bested his own top mark by breaking the 50-second barrier for the first time with a run of 49.77, easily better than his existing time of 50.03 posted just one week ago.
Bona runners impressed across the board in the 1500.
Junior Aiden Scattergood turned in a new Bonnies record of 3:56.90 in the 1500 invitational race, breaking his own record of 4:00.04 from the 2023 A-10 Outdoor Championships.
Scattergood was not the only Bonnies runner to break the program's previous 1500 record as Brendan Chapple ran 3:57.12 in his event which was good for third among all of the competitors and just off the winning time of 3:55.12 by Kenneth Morrisey of Vermont.
Drew Carlson, Nathan Sikorski and Brecken Riley all PR'ed in the 1500 as well with top-10 program times.
Sophomore William McCarthy also bested himself atop the 3000-meter steeplechase list as he was just barely able to squeak under his own program record run of 9:40.62 as he finished Friday's race in 9:40.02. Freshmen Carter Stevens (10:21.51) and Layne Haught (10:26.53) made their steeple debuts with top-10 program times as well.
Junior Casey Malloy continued to show strongly in the 5K with another race win. He set a new personal best of 15:12.27 and won his race by 12 seconds over Justin Schwartz of Marist for his second consecutive event win after also doing so in the season-opener last weekend.
In the 5000-meter invitational, senior Clay Peets ran a strong race of 14:36.01 to place 10th out of 38 competitors. He already owns the school record in that event from his run at A-10 Championships last spring.
In the 800 meters, Ryan Umiker leapt to third in the program individual times list with his time of 1:57.14 while teammate Alex Ryan moved up in the rankings as well as he broke the 2-minute mark for the first time in his collegiate outdoor career by finishing in 1:57.98.
Senior Ethan Luce gave the Bonnies one of their best-ever 10K performances on Friday night as he recorded a time of 32:00.42, the fastest run by a Bona runner in the event since Jim Mahar's program record time of 31:55 in 1988.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BOB MACFARLANE
"The St. Bonaventure men's and women's track teams had an impressive showing at the William and Mary Invitational on Friday, competing against some of the top runners on the East Coast. The teams demonstrated strong determination, not backing down from the elite competition. Each event was well represented, showing the team's growth and the promising direction they're heading. Both Coach Lonzi and myself are extremely proud of how the day unfolded."
"In Geneseo, the athletes battled challenging weather conditions – cold, windy, rainy. Notable highlights included strong recoveries from injured athletes like Lucas Catarella and Conor Quinn in the 5K. There were also improvements from Blake Wenger and Aiden Konetsky compared to the previous meet."
