Thursday - Saturday, May 9-11

LEADING OFF
  • The St. Bonaventure baseball team makes its final road trip of the season, trekking to Davidson for a three-game series beginning Thursday. With finals wrapped up, the last two series of the season will run from Thursday through Saturday instead of the traditional Friday through Sunday.
  • St. Bonaventure is looking to bounce back from a series sweep at UMass last weekend. Bona saw a 6-0 early lead go away in the opener before the Minutemen scored a 10-7 win, then saw a pitcher's duel go the way of UMass in the first game of a doubleheader last Saturday, 4-1 before UMass capped off the weekend with a win in the nightcap as well.
  • St. Bonaventure is seeking its first A-10 road series win of the year. The Bonnies took three of four in a non-conference series at Mount St. Mary's in March.
  • The Bonnies have been close to many series wins this year, but have fallen short in the rubber game after splitting the first two days. SBU is 1-5 in the rubber game of a three-game series this year, closing out a series win in the finale of the home April VCU series.
  • SBU enters this weekend hitting .279 as a team, good for sixth in the Atlantic 10. The Bonnies have hit the exact same .279 in 18 Atlantic 10 games thus far, led by a .373 average from David Marshall who is slashing .373/.481/.552 while starting every A-10 contest.
  • Adam Rankie had a 23-game hitting streak snapped in the first game of last Saturday's doubleheader at UMass. His 23-game hitting streak which stands as the second-longest in Bonnies program history and the longest hit streak for a Bonnies player since Mike Nayman's 26-game streak during the 1988 season. The longest hitting streak by any Atlantic 10 player this year, Rankie's 23-game stretch of hitting lasted from March 16 until May 3. He collected 39 hits during the streak, hitting .379 with a .436 on-base percentage, eight doubles, two home runs and 21 RBIs.

SHORT HOPS
  • Jayce Tharnish has played an important role for the Bonnies as of late, taking over centerfield duties following an injury to Paul Vossen. Tharnish, who missed a month due to injury himself, is seeing his first Atlantic 10 action and shining – he's hit .345 with a .387 on-base percentage in seven A-10 starts thus far.
  • Freshman Alex Barger has impressed as of late as well as he has not allowed a run in five appearances including 5.1 innings of work against Atlantic 10 opponents. He has allowed only two hits, holding opponents to a .111 batting average against in A-10 play.
  • Tristan Ciampa has helped account for three of Bona's five A-10 wins, going 2-0 with a save in conference competition so far. He's appeared in seven A-10 games with a 3.15 ERA in 20 innings on the hill.
  • Ciampa's 5.98 season ERA is a bit deceiving. He suffered a tough outing back in February, allowing 10 earned runs in three innings at Louisville. If you take away that outing, his ERA would stand at 4.11 for the year. His 16 overall appearances lead the team while his 40.2 innings are behind only Michael Salina (48.1), Noah Czajkowski (46.2) and Luke Roggenburk (41.2).
  • Czajkowski posted career highs in innings (6.1) and strikeouts (7) last time out at UMass. He leads the team during A-10 play in innings (29.1) while ranking second in strikeouts (24). Salina leads the squad with 32 punchouts against A-10 hitters.
  • Marshall and Rankie pace the team in RBIs during A-10 games with 15 apiece.
  • Robert Mannino is hitting .421 (8-for-19) in his last six games.
  • Jackson DeJohn has reached base in 13 consecutive games while Jayce Tharnish has done so in 10 straight.
  • Jackson DeJohn has reached base via hit by pitch a whopping 15 times this season, the most ever by a Bonnies player. Last weekend he surpassed the total of 14 HBP by Randy Moley during the 2006 season as the most in a season from a Bonnie. For his career, DeJohn has been hit 40 times, passing the previous record of 33 set by current associate head coach B.J. Salerno.
  • Other Bonnies are approaching program single season record book marks as well – with 61 hits on the year, Rankie is one hit away from moving into a tie for 15th in SBU single season history. He needs four more hits to tie Jason Radwan's 2012 total for 10th. On the hill, Michael Salina currently owns a strikeouts per nine innings total of 9.5 which would be good for eighth in program single season history. Bobby Finn, meanwhile, doesn't yet quite meet the Bonnies record book minimum of 30 innings pitched at 27.2, but his 10.8 Ks/9 would tie the record posted in 1997 by Ryan LaMattina.

DAVIDSON NOTES
  • Davidson enters this weekend at 19-27 overall and 5-13 in A-10 play. The Wildcats have been much better at home than away this year, going 15-12 on home turf as opposed to just 3-15 in true road games.
  • The Wildcats took the opener last weekend vs. Rhode Island at home, 11-4, but the Rams won the series after a 19-3 win in game two and 8-6 in the finale.
  • Eli Putnam leads Davidson and ranks fifth in the Atlantic 10 with a .354 batting average this season. His 14 home runs and 51 RBIs are also best in the A-10. Jacob Friend ranks fourth among A-10 players in on-base percentage at .483.
  • Wilson Perkins (5-4, 5.73 ERA) is one of the A-10 leaders in strikeouts with 67 in 70.2 innings of work. Cooper Cavanaugh has 52 strikeouts in 47.2 innings over 10 starts while holding opponents to a .227 batting average against.
  • Davidson ranks sixth in the A-10 in runs, but leads the league with 64 homers. The staff ERA of 7.92 stands 12th in the A-10.
