BUFFALO — The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team dropped their season opener at Buffalo, 1-0, on Thursday evening.
An 80
th minute goal from the Bulls gave the hosts the edge over the Bonnies in the lid-lifter.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle between the teams with neither able to capitalize on scoring chances.
The Bulls had the edge in shots during the opening stanza, taking nine looks at goal to the Bonnies' two. Junior
Jael Schubert saved three shots in the first half and two in the second in her St. Bonaventure debut before subbing off after a hard collision in the box.
Lauren Westwood landed the only shot on goal for the Bonnies in the first half off a free kick just inside the attacking half.
Freshman
Mahelie Barbeau took aim at goal for Bona's minutes later, missing wide just before the halftime whistle.
After the break, Buffalo took control, possessing in their attacking end, but couldn't find a breakthrough in the Bonaventure defense.
Juliana Castellano entered for the Bonnies in the 52
nd minute, taking over for Schubert. The sophomore held off the relenting Buffalo attack until the 80
th minute when a high ball in found the head of Kelly Severini who nodded home the game's only goal.
Castellano finished with four saves in 38 minutes.
Eleven different players made their St. Bonaventure debuts in the opener. Four players logged the full 90 minutes including seniors
Sydney Hayward,
Bridget Kennedy and
Elisabeth Ptacek as well as sophomore
Lauren Westwood.
The Bonnies return to action in the Lone Star State Sunday to take on Baylor in the first of two games as part of a Texas swing.
