The 'From The Heart' feature series takes an in-depth look at St. Bonaventure student-athletes and coaches. Named for the beloved Merton's Heart that overlooks campus, this series will tell the stories of Bonnies athletic programs on and off the field.
HONG KONG — Two St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse players,
Brooke Piper and
Brit Colangelo, return to campus this fall as silver medalists after competing with Team Canada at the U20 World Championship in Hong Kong during the summer.
Team Canada dominated their way into the gold medal match by outscoring opponents 127-10 in their first six contests before falling to the United States in the final game.
Piper, a native of Aurora, Ontario, saw action in all seven games, making four starts. Colangelo, a Scarborough, Ontario native, made appearances in every game.
The duo contributed statistically to the Canadian medal run with Piper tallying four goals, three assists and four draw controls while Colangelo contributed two assists, seven loose balls and four caused turnovers.
The honor of representing their home nation was not lost on the Bona juniors.
"It was such an honor to represent Canada on the world stage," said Colangelo. "You dream of an opportunity like this your whole life, so being able to live out that dream was surreal. Getting to represent my country was a privilege and an experience I will never forget."
Piper echoed that sentiment saying, "To represent Canada on the national stage is a dream come true and an honor to be a part of something so big. There are so many young girls and women who want to be a part of Team Canada and to be selected for that and to exemplify their dreams as an athlete is a feeling like no other."
Both players have been instrumental to the success of St. Bonaventure in their first two seasons.
Piper has contributed 70 points in her first 35 games with the program and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team following the 2024 season.
Colangelo was selected to the A-10 First Team in 2024 as she posted 48 groundballs and 34 caused turnovers for the Bonnies last season.
The duo looks to bring their experience from the World Championship back with them to St. Bonaventure.
"I had the chance to play with and against some of the best lacrosse players in the world, which was a great opportunity to get better," said Colangelo. "I can't wait to get back on the field playing with my teammates and achieve the goals we have set for ourselves, including getting back to the A-10 tournament this spring."
"We are extremely proud of Brit and Brooke for having the opportunity to represent their country in the World Championship this summer," said Bona head coach
LeighAnn Stauffer. "For them to be able to play with different people and learn from great coaches is a huge accomplishment for them and also a win for us as a program."
