DAYTON, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw against Atlantic 10 preseason favorite Dayton on the road Saturday evening.
The Flyers (4-2-7, 2-1-3 A-10) were able to jump out to the early lead when Ethan Sassine found the back of the net in the 11th minute for the hosts.
Kyle Macfarlane looked to find the equalizer in the 12th minute, but his shot was saved by Dayton goalkeeper Gavin Krenecki.
Krenecki was in the right position once again in the 21st minute, turning away a Bonnies free kick.
Dayton looked to double its lead in the 27th minute, but Bonnies goalkeeper Felix Schöne was there to make the save.
The Bonnies (3-7-3, 1-3-2 A-10) were able to find the game-tying goal in the 37th minute after Seth Hammond was pulled down in the box, earning a penalty kick. Macfarlane stepped up to the penalty spot and buried the chance to make it a 1-1 game late in the first half.
Bona's grabbed the lead just 10 minutes into the second half in the 55th minute when Hammond played Dean Mercer down the sideline who sent in a perfect cross where Avery Dreasky was waiting to head home the goal, giving the Bonnies a 2-1 advantage.
Dayton, however, was able to equalize in the 67th minute on a goal off the foot of Braden Seel.
Callum Shillington had a chance for the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute, but Krenecki slid over to deny him the goal.
Daniel Helle looked to send the Bonnies home winners in the 86th minute, however, his shot rolled just wide of the net as neither team was able to get a clean shot the rest of the way.
Macfarlane paced the Bonnies with three shots while Shillington, Hammond, Helle and Brendan Sheehan registered two shots each.
Schöne finished the contest with four saves.
The Bonnies are back in action Saturday, Oct. 25 when they host La Salle. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Marra Athletics Complex.
Prior to kickoff next Saturday, the Bonnies will honor graduating student-athletes Gabriel Addo, Jesper van Halderen, Seth Hammond, Ethan Streeter, Ricardo Rittersberger Galan, Nicolas Pucci, Zach McBennett, Dean Mercer, Avery Dreasky and Hugo Berville on Senior Night.
QUOTES FROM ASSISTANT COACH DANNY BERMINGHAM
"Hard fought game against a tough, well-coached Dayton side on the road. Couldn't be more proud of the boys to get the two goals on the road. We came up short in finding the winner and finishing our chances in the final moments of the game. We keep pushing forward. Go Bonnies."
