Men's Swimming and Diving Claims Second Place At Magnus Cup

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure men's swimming and diving team put on a strong performance this week at the 2025 Magnus Cup, taking second place out of six programs, highlighted by junior Joseph Pyon setting a new meet record.
 
The three-day midseason championships event hosted by Cleveland State ran from Thursday through Saturday also including the host Vikings, Binghamton, Xavier, Le Moyne and John Carroll in men's competition. The Bonnies scored 1,540.5 team points to secure second place, trailing only CSU who won the team standings with 1,694 points.
 
Pyon set his new Magnus Cup record in the 50-fly on Saturday, clocking in at 21.40 to give the Bonnies one of their three individual event wins on the meet's final day of action. He was trailed by fellow junior Carlos Hidalgo in fourth (21.77), sophomore Mark Mizsei in fifth (21.87) and freshman David Mutter in sixth (22.52), rounding out an event packed with strong Bonaventure finishes.
 
The Bonnies put on another show on Saturday during the 200-fly, claiming six of the top 10 best times in the event.

Mizsei earned the victory (1:45.84), followed by Mutter in third (1:47.31), Pyon in fourth (1:48.68), senior Boray Goren in fifth (1:48.85), freshman Willyan Haruo Matana in sixth (1:49.11) and junior Kevyn Collazo Torres in seventh (1:50.19).
 
The third individual win for SBU on Saturday came courtesy of freshman Emanuele Zingaro as he paced the field in the 100-free (43.93). Hidalgo also placed sixth in the event with a time of 45.32.
 
Senior Ben O'Neill swept the field in diving with wins on both boards. He scored 325.50 points to take the top spot in the 3-meter dive on Thursday, backing that performance up on Friday with 340.05 points on the 1-meter board.
 
Collazo Torres sped to a first-place finish on Friday in the 400-IM, clocking in at 3:56.58. The Bonnies swept the podium in the event as Goren finished second (3:56.90) and sophomore Connor Peck took third (3:57.89).
 
Sophomore Grant Chapa added to the success later that day by pacing the field in the 100-back with a time of 48.27. Termine was close behind on the podium as the third-place finisher (48.75).
 
Collazo Torres and Chapa placed second and third respectively in the 200-IM, notching times of 1:49.17 and 1:50.09. They were trailed by Goren, who placed eighth (1:51.21). The podium duo also put on strong showings in the 100-IM, along with Peck. Chapa placed third (50.13), Collazo Torres finished fourth (50.74) and Peck followed closely in fifth (50.87).
 
The Brown and White found plenty of success in relay action across the three days, collecting five total podium spots.
 
Zingaro, Hidalgo, Pyon and junior Paul Wissel got things kicked off on Thursday with a third-place finish in the 200-free relay (1:21.50). Later that evening, Termine, Mizsei, Hidalgo and freshman Blaise Sadowski also took third place in the 400-medley relay (3:17.86).
 
Chapa, Sadowski, Pyon and Zingaro combined for a time of 1:28.30 in the 200-medley relay on Friday, good for another third-place finish. Rounding out the day's relay success were Mizsei, Mutter, junior Johnny Edwards and freshman Aleksandras Aleinikovas, who worked together for another third-place result (6:40.13).
 
The Bonnies claimed their final podium placement in relays during the meet's last event on Saturday, which was the 400-free relay: Zingaro, Hidalgo, Pyon and Mutter clocked in at a combined time of 2:58.02.
 
Other Bonnies turning in impressive performances included Termine, who notched two fifth-place finishes in both the 50-back (23.03) and the 200-back (1:49.07). In the 50-back, Termine was preceded by Chapa with a time of 22.75.
 
Mizsei tied with Xavier's Aiden Leamer for second place in the 100-fly as both swimmers touched the wall in 47.45. They were trailed by Pyon in fourth (48.09) and Mutter in fifth (48.72).
 
Freshman Matheus Rinaldi earned fourth in the 500-free after clocking in at 4:29.37. Shortly after, Zingaro and Hidalgo found fifth and seventh place in the 50-free, respectively, with times of 20.58 and 20.64.
 
Johnny Edwards, senior Mark Polos and freshman Marcos Bravo each collected top-ten placements across the three-day span. Edwards claimed seventh in the 200-free (1:39.31) and Polos finished eighth in the 200-breast (2:02.05), while Bravo placed ninth in the 50-breast (25.71).

UP NEXT
The Bonnies will not compete again until the new year as the team's next action is scheduled for Jan. 10 in the form of a dual meet at Cornell.
