Mitchell Posts Double-Double against Former Team as Bonnies Take Down Canisius

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Senior forward Frank Mitchell posted 20 points and 11 rebounds as the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team defeated Canisius, 89-70, on Saturday (Nov. 8) afternoon at the Reilly Center. Mitchell played for the Golden Griffins from 2022-24.

Mitchell shot 9-of-14 from the field and added an assist and a block to his stat line en route to the 19th double-double of his career. Sophomore Joe Grahovac posted 12 points and showed up big on the defensive end with three blocks and two steals.

Italian freshmen Achille Lonati and Andrew Osasuyi shined off the bench. Lonati attacked primarily from outside, scoring 13 points while shooting 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Osasuyi wore down Canisius (1-2) in the paint, posting 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks while shooting 3-for-3 from the field.

FIRST HALF:
After Canisius jumped out to an early five-point advantage, the Bonnies (2-0) rallied into the lead, outscoring the Golden Griffins 15-6 over the next 4:16.

With 12:48 remaining in the first half, Lonati subbed in and scored eight of the Bonnies' next 12 points. However, Canisius had an answer for every bucket of Lonati's hot streak, keeping the SBU lead at four.

Canisius pulled within two points – cutting the Bonnies' advantage to 28-26 – before Bona's caught fire on a 16-3 run over the next six minutes. A third three-pointer from Lonati capped off the spurt and gave St. Bonaventure a 44-29 lead. Both teams scored six points in the remaining 2:50, bringing the score to 50-35 in favor of the Bonnies at halftime.

SECOND HALF:
The Golden Griffins cut the margin to 11 points over the first six minutes of the second half as the Bonnies went 4-for-12 from the field and 0-for-4 from three-point range out of the locker room.

The teams continued to trade buckets through the midway point of the second half. With the Bonnies in front, 78-63, and 6:53 to play, St. Bonaventure made five of its next six shots to go on an 11-1 run and put the game out of reach. SBU held Canisius without a field goal during the stretch.

Twelve of Mitchell's 20 points came in the second half, and the big man was 5-for-5 from the field after the break.
