Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Youngstown State for 13-10 Victory

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio. – Nine different Bonnies scored in the first road contest of the season at Youngstown State for the St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team. The Bonnies overcame a three-goal halftime deficit, dominating much of the second half to earn a 13-10 win over the Penguins.

Brooke Piper led the way for the Brown and White with four goals while Fiona McGovern added four points on one goal and three assists.

Other standout performances for the Bonnies came from Megan Schillinger and Katelyn Hicks. Schillinger matched her career-high and program record in draw controls with 12, a total she already achieved earlier this month. As a team the Bonnies led on the draw by a 19-8 tally.

Hicks, the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, made nine saves on a .474 save percentage.

The Bonnies (2-2) got out to a slow start as Youngstown State (1-3) took an early 3-1 lead. However, Bona's came storming back, going on a three-goal run to take their first lead of the game, 4-3.

Schillinger netted the first of the day for the Bonnies, picking up the carom off a shot from McGovern and beating the YSU goalie.

YSU went up 3-1, but goals from Grace Hollenbeck, Hannah West, and Sidney Van Tassel over the last seven minutes of the first quarter put Bona's up 4-3 after the first stanza.

The Penguins held the Bonnies scoreless in the second quarter, scoring four consecutive goals.

Youngstown State took advantage of 12 first half turnovers from the Bonnies to take a 7-4 advantage into halftime.

Out of the intermission, Bona's turned the tables and outscored the Penguins 6-1, taking a 10-8 lead after three quarters of play.

Freshman Raegan Diehl scored the first goal out of the break and her second of the season. Fellow rookie Sidney Van Tassel recorded the helper.

Piper took over on offense for the Bonnies, scoring a natural hat trick over the next four minutes.

Grace Hollenbeck joined the scoring party with 5:31 remaining in the third on a free position opportunity, putting SBU up 9-7.

YSU got one back on a power play, but the Bonnies responded almost immediately, winning the following draw and marching down field. Tori Nascimento netted her sixth of the year on a helper from McGovern.

The start of the fourth quarter was again dominated by the Bonnies with the visitors scoring twice in the first three minutes. Piper netted her fourth of the day on another power play and was assisted by Nascimento.

Freshman Riley Devlin scored her first collegiate goal as McGovern found her cutting across the cage, and Bona's took a 12-8 lead.

Both teams went on a cold spell as the next eight minutes of play were scoreless.

With 4:41 remaining, YSU's Mia Yuris scored a free position goal and Katie Grottenthaler added another for the Penguins to cut the Bona lead to 12-10.

The Bonnies won the following draw, but couldn't add cushion on the first opportunity in the offensive zone. Hicks made a huge save on a penalty kill, and McGovern scored to put the game on ice.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH LEIGHANN STAUFFER
"We were definitely up and down in this game but we're happy we pulled the win out. We dug ourselves out of a hole early, and we learned that lesson from our last game. One thing I love about this team is that if we get down, we won't stay down for long."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies return home Tuesday as they welcome Binghamton to the Marra Athletics Complex to make up a game originally scheduled for Feb. 19. Opening draw is set for noon in the first game of a doubleheader on home turf that day with the Bonnies men's team set to play at 4 p.m.
