Women's Lacrosse Drops OT Heartbreaker to Pitt in Season Opener

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Pittsburgh in Saturday afternoon's season-opener at the Marra Athletics Complex, 13-12.

Fiona McGovern picked up her 14th career game with five or more points, and Megan Schillinger had a career day in the draw circle, recording a  personal best nine draw controls.

After the Bonnies controlled much of the first half, the Panthers surged back from a five-goal deficit at halftime to outscore the hosts by an 8-2 margin in the remainder of the game.

Schillinger scored the opening goal of the 2025 season for Bona's off a feed from McGovern, and McGovern doubled the Bonnies lead less than a minute later, converting on a free position opportunity.

The Panthers matched the Bonnies with two of their own to tie the game with 9:22 to play in the first quarter.

Senior Tori Nascimento answered for the Bonnies, sailing a shot to the top corner off a pass from McGovern.

Pitt took its first lead of the game, 4-3, at 4:58 in the opening frame as Sydney Naylor scored her third goal of the day.

With a minute left in the first quarter, Bona freshman Hannah West knotted the game at four with her first collegiate goal.

McGovern scored her second goal of the day to open the second quarter, but Pitt answered quickly after. However, the Bonnies went on a 5-0 scoring run to close out the first half.

McGovern tallied her fifth point of the day with 9:51 remaining in the second quarter and started the Bonnies scoring run.

After a yellow card on Pitt's Abby Thorne, Brooke Piper sent a screaming shot past the Pitt goalie on a free position opportunity, and Grace Hollenbeck extend the lead out to three with 5:18 to play.

Schillinger finished the 5-0 run for the Bonnies, scoring two free position goals to give Bona's a 10-5 lead at the intermission.

The Panthers returned from intermission energized on the defensive end, blanking Bona's in the third quarter and making it 10-8 after 45 minutes of action.

Two more from Pitt gave them the first tie of the game since it was 5-5 with 11:34 remaining in the second quarter.

Nascimento stopped the bleeding for the Bonnies, finding the low corner. McGovern earned her fourth assist of the game on the goal.

Pitt responded, netting two goals and taking a 12-11 lead with 6:33 to play in regulation.

The Bonnies and Panthers traded defensive stops before Hollenbeck scored her second goal of the game with just under two minutes remaining in regulation to send Bona's to their first overtime game since 2022 at Detroit Mercy.

Pitt controlled the opening draw of the extra period. Jenna Hendrickson took the first shot of OT, finding the post, but Pitt retained possession by scooping up the loose ball.

Talia Zuco was awarded a free position opportunity two minutes into overtime and converted the game-winner for the Panthers.

Sophomore Katelyn Hicks made eight saves in cage for the Bonnies.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH LEIGHANN STAUFFER
"Our team played incredibly hard today and I am nothing but proud of them. They brought an ACC team into overtime. Although it didn't work out in our favor, I think this is a huge statement for the rest of the season."
