Women's Lacrosse Falls to Massachusetts in Home Finale

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's lacrosse team suffered a 20-13 loss to Massachusetts in its final home game of the year Saturday afternoon. The teams battled through windy conditions and on-and-off rain, but the two high-powered offenses combined for 33 goals.

Brooke Piper led the Bona offense with four goals to move her season total to 62, tying the single-season program record set by Molly Hastrich in 2009.

Fiona McGovern added six points on the day with three goals and three assists while Brit Colangelo contributed four caused turnovers and three groundballs on the defensive end.

The Bonnies (9-7, 5-4 A-10) secured a 4-3 lead in the opening quarter. Grace Hollenbeck netted the first of the day for the Brown and White off a feed from McGovern.

After two goals from the Minutewomen, the Bonnies answered with scores from Piper, Megan Schillinger, and McGovern to take a 4-2 lead with 2:40 to play in the first.

UMass (11-3, 9-0 A-10) tallied a third goal before the end of the quarter and opened the second with a goal to knot the score at four.

McGovern took advantage of a man-up opportunity with 12:14 on the clock, helping the Bonnies regain the lead; however, UMass responded with two quick goals to make it 6-5 in favor of the Minutewomen.

Schillinger netted her second of the day less than a minute later, but UMass outscored the Bonnies 5-1 over the remaining 10 minutes of the second quarter to take a 11-7 lead into halftime.

Massachusetts' Kassidy Morris scored twice to begin the third quarter and extend the advantage to six, but the run was quelled by Piper's third goal of the game.
After UMass took a 14-8 lead with 9:34 remaining in the third quarter, Bona's went on a three-goal run to end the stanza, taking momentum into the final 15 minutes.

However, UMass controlled the fourth quarter, scoring six unanswered, taking a 20-11 lead with 6:41 left on the clock.

Nascimento and Hollenbeck netted the final two goals of the game for Bona's as they posted their most goals against the Minutewomen since 2009.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH LEIGHANN STAUFFER
"I think the good learning lesson is we've struggled in the beginning of the third quarter pretty much every game this year, and we outscored them in the third, so that's definitely a plus. I think the biggest thing for this team is getting them to believe they can compete with a team like this, and letting that stick for 60 minutes. That'll be the key. Hopefully we see them on Championship Sunday"

"[Piper] is extremely coachable. She changes up her shot. She's very difficult to scout for another team. You can hardly see the ball come out of her stick. She's got different shots. She's coachable and she's nowhere near her peak yet, so it's awesome to coach her. It awesome to work with her and I'm excited for her.
