ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Nationally-ranked Saint Joseph's stifled the St. Bonaventure attack en route to a 15-3 men's lacrosse victory Saturday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex.
The Hawks (8-3, 1-1 A-10), ranked 15th and 20th in the national polls this week, held the Bonnies off the board for the first half with a 5-0 advantage at the break.
Drew Kenney tallied the first Bonnies goal on a rocket from past midfield at the 13:43 mark of the third period before the Hawks ran off the next three scores.
Kyle Pepper scored for the Bonnies and Patrick Shanahan added a fourth quarter goal to account for Bona's scoring.
Pepper and Owen Tasse each registered two caused turnovers defensively with Connor Ballou picking up three groundballs.
Isaac Farmer turned away 17 shots in net.
Ben Dutton led the Hawks with six points (5G-1A) and Collin Campbell also delivered a hat trick.
The Bonnies (5-8, 0-2) return to action on the road next weekend at UMass.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH RANDY MEARNS
"It's another tough loss against a top-20 team, but I feel we got better today. The A-10 has three ranked teams and we have to understand the level. We are a young group of mostly freshmen and sophomores and it is a great experience for them to understand the pace and level of play."
"We competed. I'm proud of the effort. Like any building program we are going through our share of learning experiences. Isaac Farmer and Aaron Eberhard and our defensive mids had a really good day. Patrick Shanahan was an inspiration on the offensive end. We'll watch the film and continue to build for Saturday against another ranked team in UMass. For a young program, the A-10 is the highest level of NCAA lacrosse. We'll get back to work and strive for the level of play relevant to the Atlantic 10."
