ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team dropped its season opener to Niagara, 3-2, Thursday evening at the Marra Athletics Complex.
The Purple Eagles (1-0-0) did not take long to strike in the first half, opening the scoring in the ninth minute off a goal from a corner kick from Juan Cardona.
The visitors took a two-goal lead in the first half with a long throw-in to the box where Chase Dade headed home the goal.
The Bonnies (0-1-0) had their chances in the first half, forcing six corners, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Coming out of the break, the Bonnies applied early pressure to the Niagara defense.
In the 47th minute, graduates Ethan Streeter and Seth Hammond linked up on a long ball down the right side of the field. Hammond made the touch on the pass and worked around the defender, finding enough space in the box for a shot far post and slotting it past the goalkeeper to cut the deficit in half.
Niagara, however, pushed its lead back to two in the 61st minute when Tommy Mittelstadt punched home a loose ball in front of the St. Bonaventure net.
The Bonnies did not go away quietly, earning a penalty kick in the 87th minute. Kyle Macfarlane stepped up and buried it into the back of the net, making it a one-goal game with minutes to play.
That is as close as the Bonnies would get as Niagara would run out the clock, capturing the victory.
The Bonnies are back in action Sunday, Aug. 24 when they travel to take on Bucknell. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MICK GIORDANO
"Couldn't be more proud of our guys, they never quit, stuck to the gameplan and never quit. Even until the last minute, they just kept driving. We definitely had wonderful moments, but credit to Coach Boyle with what they did and how they had their team set."
