Bucknell Sneaks Past Bonnies, 3-2, with Late Game-Winning Goal

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team fell to Bucknell, 3-2, in heartbreaking fashion on the road Sunday evening.

With the game tied 2-2 in the 88th minute, Kiko Hidalgo and Nate Coughlin linked up with Jakub Samelko in front of net who punched home the game-winning goal.

Bucknell (2-0-0) wasted little time getting the game's first goal Sunday, taking advantage of a turnover and scoring in the opening minute to take the early lead.

The Bonnies (0-2-0), however, were quick to answer.

Seth Hammond stood over a free kick in the second minute and rocketed home a left-footed shot to tie the game, 1-1.

Bona's looked to take the lead in the sixth minute when Hammond had two chances blocked in the box while Ricardo Rittersberger Galan had his attempt saved by Bucknell goalkeeper Freddie Lapsworth.

The two sides headed into halftime tied at one goal apiece.

Coming out of halftime, Kyle Macfarlane made a run into the box and sent a cross in front of net where Rittersberger Galan was waiting to head home his first goal as a Bonnie, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute.

Bucknell quickly tied the game in the 54th minute on a goal from Jack Lucas.

The Brown and White had chances to retake the lead in the second half.

Jesper van Halderen had a chance stopped by Lapsworth in the 76th minute while Hammond had a shot roll wide in the 84th minute. Macfarlane also had a look on net in the 86th minute, but was turned away by the goalkeeper.

Hammond finished with a team-high five shots while Macfarlane and Rittersberger Galan each registered two chances.

In net, Felix Shöne made three saves.

The Bonnies are back in action Thursday, Aug. 28 when they travel to take on Saint Francis (PA). Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MICK GIORDANO
"Extremely proud again of the effort and energy given by our group. We are improving and learning every day. Losing is always tough. Losing a second one in a row knowing we could have won makes it even more difficult. A winning mentality doesn't mean you are undefeated. What it does mean is you have no quit and never give in. Once again, our guys demonstrated that. Now, we can't expect to give up three goals so have to fix that, but we created some wonderful chances so as we continue to fix that stats, success will come. An off day to reflect and back to work on Tuesday. This group has wonderful things coming as long as we continue to believe in the process and all continue to be the best version of ourselves daily."
