Macfarlane’s Second-Half Goal Lifts Bonnies to 1-0 Shutout Over Saint Francis (PA)

LORETTO, Pa. – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team earned its first win of the season Thursday afternoon, defeating Saint Francis (PA), 1-0, on the road behind a second-half strike from junior Kyle Macfarlane.

The Bonnies (1-2-0) capitalized in the 48th minute after forcing a turnover in the midfield. Sophomore Yaseen Khaled, while falling, slipped a through ball to a wide-open Macfarlane, who dribbled into the box and slotted home the eventual game-winner.

Saint Francis (0-2-0) threatened late with a pair of free kicks in the final three minutes, but the Bonnies defense held firm, clearing the final attempt in the 89th minute to preserve the shutout.

Bona's nearly broke through earlier in the match as Benjamin Haynes saw a chance sail wide in the eighth minute. In the second half, Seth Hammond narrowly missed on a strong look at goal as his shot rolled just past the post.

Freshman goalkeeper Felix Shöne picked up his first collegiate victory and clean sheet, recording three saves.

Macfarlane and Callum Shillington paced the attack with two shots apiece.

The Bonnies return home Sunday, Aug. 31, to host Mercyhurst. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Marra Athletics Complex.
