The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team begins Atlantic 10 play this Sunday, hosting VCU at 1 p.m. for the last contest of a three-game homestand.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Bonnies celebrated Senior Day last Sunday with a win, beating Oakland in shutout fashion, 2-0. Graduate student
Giovanna Coghetto and sophomore
Hannah Lindenberger each tallied goals to help propel the team, and goalkeepers
Jael Schubert and
Adelaide Paredes each played scoreless halves to keep the Golden Grizzlies at bay.
Â
BACK-TO-BACK
Bona's victory over Oakland marked the second straight shutout win for the team, both of them coming at home. Â Just a few days prior, the Bonnies gritted out a 1-0 win over Long Island as goalkeeper
Juliana Castellano posted seven saves, playing full-time. The squad has not allowed more than one goal in a single match since Aug. 24, and Bonaventure goalkeepers collectively lead the A-10 with 6.13 saves per game. Individually, Castellano leads the conference with 5.33 saves per game and ranks third in total saves (32) despite having played two fewer games than many other ranking players.Â
Â
VETERAN PRESENCE
Coghetto has had an impressive impact on offense as a fifth-year player. She paces the team with 11 points (5G-1A) and she recorded a hat trick against Post (8/31). She ranks third in the conference in goals and fourth in points, having already scored two game-winners this season. Furthering the veteran leadership is fellow graduate
Daniela De Souza, who ranks second on the team with five points (1G-3A).
Â
ABOUT VCU
- The Rams are led by head coach Lauryn Hutchinson in her first season with the program. A VCU soccer alum, she has led the team into battle against power opponents No. 14Â Virginia Tech, No. 5Â Virginia and Miami so far this season.
- VCU looks to bounce back this season from a first-round exit in last year's A-10 Tournament, as they went 4-9-5 with a conference record of 3-2-5.
- The Rams collected back-to-back wins against Loyola Maryland and Navy just two weeks ago.
- Pacing the team is redshirt junior Jensyn Lins with six points (1G-4A), and the runner-up is junior Vivian Vendt with four points on two goals. Nine different Rams have scored points so far this season, and primary goalkeeper Mia Pongratz has made 45 saves.
Â
SERIES HISTORY
The Rams lead the all-time series with a record of 6-2-1 against the Bonnies. Last season, the meeting resulted in a hard-fought tie, ending with a score of 1-1. Senior
Hannah Walker, who played full-time, is the only player on the current roster to have seen action in that contest.
