Bonnies Stumble At Home Against Rhode Island, 3-0

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure women's soccer team dropped a conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at the Marra Athletics Complex, falling to Rhode Island, 3-0.

The Rams (8-3-0, 2-1 A-10) controlled possession for much of the game, setting the tone early and never allowing an opportunity to rally for the Bonnies (3-6-2, 0-3 A-10).

Rhode Island's McKenna Sylvester was successful in netting two first half chances, scoring unassisted in the 10th minute and again in the 25th minute, this time assisted by Lauren MacDonald. MacDonald then added to the day's point total with a goal in the second half.

The Bonnies showed flashes of defensive prowess early in the game as starting goalkeeper Adelaide Paredes made three huge saves in quick succession.

As the Rams stormed down the field in the seventh minute on a breakaway, Paredes put her body on the line to stop a blazing shot. As the ball was deflected and sent over to the middle of the box for a second shot, she dashed across the face of the net and dove to make a one-footed save. Again, the ball ended up at the feet of the Rams and was returned towards goal, but the outstretched Paredes got a hand on the shot and poked it out towards her teammates.

Although the sequence gave Bona energy, they could not parlay the momentum into any offensive success. A 21-4 discrepancy in shots clouded the hosts' attempt to climb back into the match.

Senior goalkeeper Jael Schubert entered the game after the halftime break and made two saves.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MELISSA SHERWOOD
"I think we were just a little bit lethargic. There's no excuses. They traveled far, and we had a far conference game (on Thursday). That's the demands of this level when you're in a conference and you have to go on the road, fly places and come on the bus. They [Rhode Island] had the same circumstances today and we've got to get used to it."

"We were lethargic to start with. We were off the pace, we weren't there. Our press wasn't on. And that's how it goes."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies will be back on the road this week as they travel to face George Mason on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
