Bonnies Fall to Cleveland State, 3-1

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest, 3-1, on the road at Cleveland State Tuesday evening.

The Vikings (2-2-4) struck for the game's first goal in the 60th minute when Jacob Deever found the back of the net.

Seth Hammond looked to tie the game just two minutes later, but his shot deflected off the post and out.

Cleveland State extended its lead to 2-0 in the 67th minute off the foot of Peleg Armendariz before pushing the lead to three goals in the 71st minute.

Hammond was able to cut into the Bonnies deficit in the 79th minute, scoring his sixth goal of the season to make it a 3-1 game.

The Bonnies (3-5-2) had their chances to break the scoreless tie in the first half.

Neshawn Sutherland and Etienne Godin had back-to-back chances in the 14th minute. Godin's chance, however, hit the post while Sutherland's missed just over the crossbar.

Sutherland kept the pressure on, generating chances in the 24th and 31st minutes. Both chances forced the Cleveland State goalkeeper off his line to make the save.

Dean Mercer looked to score in the closing minutes of the first half but was unable to come away with a goal.

Hammond and Sutherland paced the Bonnies with three shots each while Ethan Streeter registered a pair of shots.

In net, Ben Choudhry earned the start, making three saves. Alex Ohmart saw 12 minutes of action in net for the Brown and White.

The Bonnies are back in action Saturday, Oct. 4 when they host Rhode Island. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. at the Marra Athletics Complex.

QUOTES FROM HEAD QUOTE MICK GIORDANO
"Disappointing night for us on the road. To be honest, that is a game we should not lose but we have. We didn't have the competitive mentality we require as a program every day. We must take some lessons in understanding what it takes to stay consistent at a high level and to earn everything. A good first half but not finishing chances to a poor and slow start to the second half. The staff needs to take the fact we've had two slow starts in a row coming out of the half and find a way to get it sorted for the team."

"The group fought once again to the end but put us in a bad spot that was too big to dig out of this time. We will get ourselves a day off, then come back and allow the film to give us the harsh truths from tonight so we can be better next time out. We need to learn but also have a quick process to move forward as this Saturday should be seen as important as a Cup final. Thank you to all the alumni and families that came to support us in Cleveland. We are grateful to all of you."
