Bonnies Fall to Richmond in Atlantic 10 Action

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University women's basketball team fell to Atlantic 10 preseason favorite Richmond, 80-60, Saturday afternoon at the Reilly Center.

Aaliyah Parker paced the Bonnies with 18 points, six rebounds and five steals while Laycee Drake chipped in 16 points to go along with six boards. Elyse MacDonough tallied nine points off the bench for the Brown and White.

Bona's led the Spiders early on, 11-10, heading into the first quarter media timeout.

Richmond used a 6-0 spurt out of the timeout to take a 16-11 lead over the Bonnies.

The visitors would lead the rest of the game.

Brianna Barr-Buday cut the deficit to three, 20-17, at the start of the third, but Richmond quickly grew its lead to 11 midway through the period.

The Bonnies cut the Spiders lead to six ahead of halftime but Maggie Doogan's layup as time expired in the half gave the visitors a 38-30 lead at the break.

The Spiders made four out of their first five chances in the second half, seeing their lead grow to 14 with 4:33 showing on the clock in the third.

A Doogan three as the third quarter clock wound down gave Richmond its biggest lead of the game, 60-39.

The Bonnies looked to spark a comeback in the fourth following 3-pointers from MacDonough and Kaylee Krystof as part of a 10-2 run that cut the deficit down to 66-53.

That is as close as the Bonnies would get, however, as Richmond maintained its double-digit lead for the victory.

GAME NOTES

  • The Bonnies finished the game shooting 43.9 percent (25-for-57) from the field while Richmond shot 50.8 percent (32-for-63) from the floor.
  • The Spiders got the better of the Bonnies on the glass, outrebounding the Brown and White, 37-27.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JIM CROWLEY
"Certainly there was things that we did well. I thought we broke down in the first quarter. I thought that quarter should have been a lot closer. I know it was only five but I thought we should have had the lead or been even on that. Then the third quarter, we just weren't getting good possessions and we didn't raise our level defensively. Simple version is that for a lot of the game, they got easier shots than we did."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies head back out on the road to take on Duquesne Wednesday, Jan. 7. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
