ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Despite five players reaching double figures, the St. Bonaventure men's basketball team fell to Richmond, 89-80, on Wednesday night (Jan. 7) at the Reilly Center.
Buddy Simmons II led the way for the Bonnies, scoring 18 points while shooting 8-for-14 from the field.
Dasonte Bowen posted 15 points, marking the fourth time in his last five games that he has scored 15-plus points.
Forward
Frank Mitchell recorded 14 points and 12 rebounds for his Atlantic-10-leading 10th double-double of the season.
Daniel Egbuniwe and
Cayden Charles scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.
FIRST HALF
With the game tied at 10 with 14:14 remaining in the first half, Richmond (12-4, 2-1 A-10) outscored St. Bonaventure (11-4, 0-2 A-10) 9-2 over the next 4:20, building an early seven-point lead. The Bonnies pulled within four at the 6:12 mark, but the Spiders continued their offensive onslaught, taking a double-digit lead with 3:01 before the break, 37-27.
Egbuniwe kickstarted an SBU comeback effort with back-to-back three pointers, cutting the Bonnies' deficit to four. After Richmond answered with a three, Bowen scored four unanswered points to end the half, capping off a 10-3 run to end the half. At halftime, St. Bonaventure trailed, 40-37.
SECOND HALF
Richmond came out of the break with a 7-0 run, taking a double-digit lead it would maintain throughout most of the second half. The Spiders' advantage extended as high as 16 points with 4:52 to play.
St. Bonaventure cut its deficit in half with an 8-0 run over the next 2:42. The Bonnies pulled within seven points multiple times in the final minutes, but could not complete the comeback, falling 89-80. Simmons II scored 11 of the Bonnies' last 21 points.
UP NEXT
The Bonnies will complete a two-game homestand on Saturday (Jan. 10) against Fordham at the Reilly Center. Tipoff is scheduled for noon ET, and the game will be televised live on USA Network.
A jersey retirement ceremony for Bonnies legend Glenn Hagan will take place at halftime.
