PHILADELPHIA – The St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team snapped a seven-game losing streak against Saint Joseph's, defeating the Hawks 1-0 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Bonnies (5-4-3, 2-1-1 A10) broke the scoreless tie in the 59th minute when Harvey Skurek played in a pass to Luc Finelli on the right wing. Finelli headed the ball in front of goal where Brendan Sheehan was waiting to slot home the eventual game-winning goal.
The Hawks were on the attack toward the latter stages of the second half, searching for the equalizer.
Sebastian Perez-Gasiba shot through traffic in the 74th minute saw Bonnies goalkeeper Winston Jory make a diving save while Conor Clair forced Jory off his line in the 81st minute to make a sliding save, preserving the shutout.
The Bonnies were on the attack early with shots from Ryan Holt in the eighth minute and Kyle Macfarlane in the 11th minute, but both chances sailed wide of the net.
Ronan Sullivan had looks on net in the 13th and 18th minutes, but Jory was able to make saves on both opportunities to keep Saint Joseph's (3-4-5, 0-3-2 A-10) off the board early on.
Bona's looked to break the deadlock when Holt played Callum Shillington through on a breakaway. A Saint Joseph's defender, however, was able to track back to tackle the ball out of play.
Daniel Helle finished with a team-high three shots while Sheehan finished with a pair of chances.
In net, Jory recorded five saves while registering his fourth shutout of the season.
With the victory, The Bonnies improve to 4-2-1 on the road this season.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MICK GIORDANO
"Saying we proud of the group doesn't really do it justice. SJU is a well-coached and organized team. They are the definition of grit. Today wasn't perfect by any means but that is okay. The group gave us everything and emptied their tanks out for three points on the road. For that, we are appreciative."
"Time to recover and rest. We have areas to sort to keep the momentum going. But before that it is truly recover. We have a full week to prepare for the next big test in conference."
"Thank you for the continued amazing support from our alumni, families and friends when we travel. They were loud and present which helped us get over the line."
"Well done to the staff and players for the hours put into these last seven days with three games. Everyone's unseen hours work has a direct result on the results we've achieved, especially today."
