GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The St. Bonaventure men's cross country team had two runners at the front of the pack Saturday morning at the Aubrey Shenk Invitational as graduate Aiden Scattergood and sophomore Brayden Frair finished second and third respectively to lead the Bonnies to a third-place standing on the historic Gettysburg National Park battlefield.
As a team, the Bonnies registered 98 points to score third out of 44 teams in attendance. Only Shippensburg (70) and Johns Hopkins (82) were ahead of Bonaventure in the team standings.
The team's top seven average of 25:10 is just two seconds off the program record set in the Gettysburg meet last fall.
Scattergood battled for the meet win, leading through the first mile before setting a new personal best 8K time of 24:29.0. He was just behind Shippensburg's Tommy Crum (24:18.6) for the overall victory and just in front of teammate Frair who crossed the finish line at 24:32.2 to place third out of 465 competitors.
The fast Bonnies duo were the first two of 13 members of the team to establish new personal best times in Saturday's meet.
Scattergood remains second in Bonnies individual history with his time while Frair jumps into third in the program record book.
Junior Nathan Sikorski was next across the stripe for the Bonnies as he clocked in at 25:19.4, good for 18th overall with a PR by over 20 seconds from his mark set on the same course a year prior. Sikorski now stands sixth in the Bonnies records.
Senior William McCarthy placed fourth on the team and 36th overall (25:42.1) while Mason Curl established a new Bonnies freshman record of 25:49.0.Â
Curl's time breaks the previous Bona's men's 8K record held for just three weeks by Tadios Eyasu, set at Lock Haven. Curl also moves into 12th individually in the Bonnies record book.
In all, the team posted seven new top-20 times, remaking the program record book.
Sophomore Alexander Rennick broke the 26-minute mark for the first time in his career as his run of 25:53.7 was easily better than his effort of 26:11.8 in this meet a year ago and will leap to 13th in the individual SBU records.
Freshman Caleb Davis impressed as well at 26:00.4, moving to 16th in the record book while sophomore Jack Handman also jumped into the school's top-20 for the first time as he registered a time of 26:07.1, good for 18th individually in school history.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BOB MACFARLANE
"Aiden and Brayden set the tone for an impressive day of racing. One of our biggest goals is to have our athletes running their best when it matters most, toward the end of the season. Seeing so many of our young men accomplish that today is extremely rewarding and speaks volumes about their commitment, hard work, and belief in our training program.
"To put our team's growth into perspective, our eighth runner today finished in 26:07. That time would have made him our second-fastest runner at this same meet in 2024. That statistic alone shows just how far this program has come, not only at the front of our lineup but throughout the entire team.
"Another exciting milestone is that, for the first time in program history, four freshmen have qualified for our conference championship. This is a tremendous accomplishment and a strong indication of the bright future ahead for Bonnies cross country.
"As coaches, we couldn't be more excited about the direction of this program. What makes this season especially rewarding isn't just the times or the places, but the growth, maturity, and confidence we're seeing in these young men. They are beginning to understand what it means to be part of something bigger than themselves."
