LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Eleven of 17 St. Bonaventure men's cross country runners competing in Saturday's Lock Haven Invitational set new personal bests to highlight the day's competition on a sunny morning in the Keystone State.
St. Bonaventure placed sixth out of 22 teams recording scores in the Crimson Race to begin the morning.
With Bona's regular top-seven sitting this weekend in preparation for next week's Paul Short Run, Saturday's meet gave a chance for many Bonnies underclassmen to shine.
Two freshmen led the way for SBU in the Crimson Race as Tadios Eyasu and Caleb Davis each recorded strong showings. Eyasu ran a time of 25:54.2 to place 30th in the field of 100 competitors. His time will also jump to 11th individually in the Bonnies program record book and represents the top run by a Bona's freshman.
Right behind, his classmate Davis crossed the finish line at 26:06.0 in 38th. Davis also notched a top-20 individual Bona time as he will move to 14th in the Bonnies records.
Junior Layne Haught also registered a personal best of 26:16.9 for a third new Bona top-20 mark.
Two more Bona freshmen, Jake Schonhoff (26:23.4) and Grant Cornell (26:27.6) showed strong as well as part of the team's scoring five.
In the White Race later in the morning, sophomore Canton Wetzel was third across the line in a field of 228 runners with his 8K time of 26:42.0, a new personal best. Freshman teammate Luke Campbell was just behind in fifth at 26:45.1.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BOB MACFARLANE
"It was a very productive day for our guys. Teddy had an outstanding race, setting a new Bona's freshman 8K record. Harrier Awards went to Teddy and Canton for their performances. Next up for our top-seven will be a trip to the nationally recognized Paul Short Run next week."
NEXT UP
St. Bonaventure will head to the Paul Short Run, one of the region's top events each fall. Competition is slated for Friday, Oct. 2 in Bethlehem, Pa.
