VESTAL, N.Y. – Kyle Macfarlane and Brendan Sheehan netted goals to lift the St. Bonaventure University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win on the road at Binghamton Tuesday evening.
In the 56th minute, Macfarlane was taken down in the box and originally no fouled was called.
Following a quick review, the Bonnies (4-4-3) were awarded a penalty kick and Macfarlane stepped up and buried the chance to give the Brown and White the lead.
Just five minutes later, Binghamton was given a penalty kick, but goalkeeper Maarten Schouten, who entered the game in the second half, was able to make the save to his left to keep the Bearcats (1-6-4) off the board.
Searching for the equalizer, Binghamton's Itai Levisman had a look on net in the 69th minute, however, his shot hit off the post and back into play, allowing the Bonnies defense to clear the ball.
The Bonnies were able to put the game away for good in the 84th minute when Callum Shillington was played in down the sideline. Shillington played a low ball across the front of the net where Sheehan was there to slot home his fourth goal of the season.
Shillington had the first shot on net of the night for the Brown and White in the 12th minute but was turned away by Binghamton goalkeeper Connor Cresswell.
Bonnies goalkeeper Alex Ohmart was tested in the 41st minute, stopping Binghamton's lone shot on goal of the half.
Ben Marsh looked to put the Bonnies ahead late in the first half with a free kick in the final 30 seconds. His chance, however, was just wide of the net as the two sides went into halftime scoreless.
Schouten finished the contest with five saves as he and Ohmart combined for the shutout.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH MICK GIORDANO
"We are extremely proud of the group for their efforts and performance tonight. We've preached small details and pouring into their teammates over anything else. It might seem silly and basic, but those things we were missing recently. Tonight reminded them what comes when you do that. We were able to play 23 guys which shows the continued growth and investment by our guys to develop themselves."
"By no means was tonight perfect which is okay. We don't need perfect though. We just need guys willing to work and never giving up. The quick turnaround and going to get it done on the road shows that fighting spirit again from the group."
"Thank you to all of our alumni and families that came to support us!"
"Now time to recovery, review, and prepare for a massive A10 game. But extremely proud of the staff and group."
