St. Bonaventure Drops High-Scoring Affair at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – The St. Bonaventure men's basketball team dropped its highest scoring game of the season to Richmond, 99-94, on Saturday night (Feb. 21) at the Robins Center. Buddy Simmons II led all scorers with 30 points while shooting 5-for-10 from beyond the arc.
 
Daniel Egbuniwe buried a career-high six threes en route to a career-best-tying 22 points. Frank Mitchell tallied his 15th double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
 
FIRST HALF
Both teams started hot, each making four of its first five shots. With 15:45 remaining in the half and the game tied at 12, the Bonnies (14-13, 3-11 A-10) went on a 6-0 run to take the first substantial lead of the game.
 
With 7:57 before the break and St. Bonaventure ahead by six, Richmond (15-13, 5-10 A-10) made each of its next four three-point attempts within a span of just over a minute to retake a slim lead. Despite baskets from Egbuniwe and Simmons II to break up the run, the Bonnies trailed, 33-32, at the 6:44 mark.
 
Simmons II scored seven of SBU's final 14 points to close the half as the Bonnies retook the lead heading into the locker room. At the half, St. Bonaventure led, 46-44.
 
SECOND HALF
St. Bonaventure made its first two shots out of the break, taking a four-point lead. However, the Spiders answered with an 8-0 run, claiming a four-point lead of their own with 17:37 to play. 
 
The Richmond lead would swell to six points by the 16:12 mark. The Bonnies chipped away, outscoring UR 10-2 over the next 2:15 thanks to a pair of triples from Simmons II. The teams traded baskets throughout the early minutes of the second half, with neither team gaining more than a three-point advantage until 9:47 remained on the clock.
 
Richmond made three unanswered triples as part of a 9-0 run, taking a 77-70 lead that it would not relinquish. The Bonnies would pull within three at multiple points down the stretch with three-pointers from Egbuniwe and Simmons II, but ultimately fell short, 99-94.
 
UP NEXT
The Bonnies will return to the Reilly Center to face Rhode Island on Wednesday (Feb. 25). Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, and the game will be streamed live on ESPN+. The game will also be televised on the YES Network on tape delay.
 
NOTES:
  • Mitchell's four offensive rebounds brings his season total to 116, tied for the most in Division I.
  • For the second time this season, Dasonte Bowen posted a career-best-tying 10 assists.
  • Egbuniwe's three-point barrage consisted of his first made three-pointers since Feb. 3 at Dayton.
  • With 10 points, Cayden Charles has scored at least nine points in 18 consecutive games.
  • Freshman Andrew Osasuyi finished with eight points and a career-best tying eight rebounds.
  • The Bonnies' 46 first half points were their most since Dec. 3 vs. Bloomsburg.
