Billikens Push Ahead Late For 7-5 Decision in Rainy Series Opener

ERIE, Pa. – Saint Louis grabbed runs in each the eighth and ninth innings to break a late tie and snag a 7-5 victory over the St. Bonaventure baseball team Friday afternoon at Mercyhurst Baseball Field.

Battling through a driving cold rain in the early innings, the game remained scoreless through the first three and a half innings.

The Bonnies broke through in the fourth when a Billikens error opened the door for three runs. Gavin Constantine capped the frame by ripping a double to the right-center field gap, bringing home a run as the Bonnies pushed ahead, 3-0.

That lead proved to be short-lived, however, as the Billikens also took advantage of a pair of Bonnies errors that allowed SLU to pull even and then take the lead.

A Drew Kleinheider double put the Billikens on the board and a dropped fly ball in left tied the game. Later in the frame, Chase Beattie's two-run homer to center gave the Billikens their first advantage of the contest.

Manuel Castro evened the ledger again in the Bonaventure seventh when he drove a two-run double to right, scoring both Conner Vercollone and Anthony Fernandez for a 5-5 score.

Saint Louis broke the deadlock on a Joey Canzoni single up the middle in the eighth and Kleinheider added insurance with a run-scoring single to right in the ninth.

The Bonnies put the tying run on base in the ninth with one out, but could not come up with another tally with runners in scoring position as Saint Louis reliever Drew Welk closed the door.

David James started for the Bonnies and was outstanding, allowing just two earned runs over his six innings while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Mark Holm also tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Castro paced the Bonnies with three hits while Fernandez and Vercollone each had two.

The two squads are back in action Saturday at 3 p.m.
