ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University softball team split their midweek doubleheader against Youngstown State on Tuesday afternoon at Joyce Field.
The Bonnies won game one with a final score of 6-5 and fell 9-1 in game two.
Game 1 – St. Bonaventure 6, Youngstown State 5
The Bonnies got the offense rolling early in game one. After back-to-back singles to lead off the first inning, St. Bonaventure loaded the bases on an error. Kymora Wang then lifted a fly ball to left field, where an error by the left fielder allowed two runs to score. SBU scored another run later in the inning on an RBI single by Lauren Dundon, giving the Bonnies a 3-0 lead.
Youngstown State responded with a two-out rally in the top of the second. With runners on first and second, the Penguins hit a double to right center to score both runners and cut the SBU lead to 3-2.
St. Bonaventure added to their lead in the fourth inning. In a pinch-hit opportunity, Annabel Burke hit her second home run of the year to left field. After a double from Nolah Moyer put her in scoring position, Sydney DeGram came through with a single through the middle to make it a 5-3 Bonnies lead.
In the top of the sixth, Youngstown State started to mount a comeback attempt. With two outs, the Penguins brought two runs home on a double to left center, cutting the SBU lead to 5-4.
The Bonnies padded their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Following a leadoff double from Eleanor Park, Sydney DeGram ran out an infield single and Park came home to score on a throwing error. Heading into the seventh, the Bonnies held a 6-4 lead.
In the seventh, Youngstown State was unable to complete a comeback. The Penguins scored one run on a passed ball but lined out to right field to end the game.
In the circle, Ava Lomelin, Kendall Stull, and Mackenzie Frani each pitched 2.1 innings to help the Bonnies secure the win.
Game 2 – Youngstown State 9, St. Bonaventure 1 – 5 innings
Youngstown State started the scoring in the second inning. The Penguins strung together a walk and three hits to put three runs on the board, giving them a 3-0 lead.
The Penguins carried their momentum into the third inning. After a leadoff walk, YSU hit a home run over the left field fence to extend their lead to 5-0. Youngstown State added to the lead with a pair of RBI hits and a fielder's choice to give them a 9-0 advantage.
The Bonnies finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After Abigail Ahearn led off the inning with a single, she came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Kymora Wang later in the inning.
St. Bonaventure was unable to bring another run to the plate in the fifth inning, leading to a run-rule victory for the Penguins.
In the loss, Ava Lomelin threw 2.1 innings for the Bonnies while allowing only one hit and no earned runs.

The Bonnies travel to Loyola Chicago this upcoming weekend for a three-game series. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
