Bonnies Fill Stat Sheet in Men's Lacrosse Slugfest at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – Jaxon Dillon netted a career-best six goals and the St. Bonaventure men's lacrosse team set a new program record for goals in an Atlantic 10 game but host Delaware captured the win in a 19-16 slugfest Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.

Dillon's six goals tied the Bonnies single-game program record while teammate Patrick Shanahan added a career-best six points on three goals and three assists, adding four groundballs. Blake Maracle also posted four points (2G-2A) while Jonas Johnson (1G-2A) and Chris Lawrence (two goals) each had multiple points as well.

The six goals scored by Dillon represent the most in a single contest by any Atlantic 10 player this season.

Delaware opened the scoring just over two minutes in, but the Bonnies responded with a 3-0 run to lead by a pair late in the first quarter following goals by Nino Sindoni, Blake Maracle and Johnson.

It was a 4-4 game after the opening quarter and a 5-5 tally before the Blue Hens ran off five unanswered goals for a 9-5 lead with 4:01 left before the half. The Bonnies took momentum into the break as Dillon went off for a natural hat trick, scoring twice before intermission and a third time at the 11:12 mark of the third as the Bonnies got within one, then tied the score with 7:50 remaining in the third when Shanahan found the back of the net.

Delaware responded with another 3-0 run before Chris Lawrence struck to make it a 13-10 Hens lead heading for the final quarter.

Yet another run from the Blue Hens allowed the hosts to take control at 17-12 with 7:25 to go, but the Bonnies had one last attack.

Three of the next four scores went for the Bonnies behind Dillon, Shanahan and Lad Harper for an 18-15 tally with 5:19 showing on the clock.

Jack Kolbe put the rally on ice, though, with his goal at the 3:14 mark. Shanahan finished off his hat trick with 2:19 to play as the game's final score.

Brendan Powers led Delaware with six goals as the Blue Hens improved to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in A-10 play.

  • Delaware held a 53-37 advantage in total shots and dominated the faceoff dot by going 26-for-38.
  • Saturday was the first-ever meeting between the two programs; Delaware is in its first season in the A-10 for men's lacrosse.
  • Bona's previous top mark for goals in an A-10 game came with 13 at Hobart last season.
  • The 16 goals scored by the Bonnies are the most in any game for the program since posting 21 in a win vs. Hampton in 2022. Saturday's goal total will stand second in SBU history.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH BRENDAN STORRIER
"We need to put a full game together of complimentary lacrosse. We have had multiple games this year where we play good defensively and poor offensively and vice versa like we did today, having a great day offensively. Delaware is a very talented team and kept coming up with plays offensively to keep the lead. We have one more game left this season and I am excited to see the fight we bring for a special senior class."

UP NEXT
The Bonnies will host their regular season finale Friday night vs. Hobart, celebrating Senior Day at the Marra Athletics Complex. Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
