Piper's Historic Performance Propels Bonnies To 19-9 Road Victory Over La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – Senior Brooke Piper put on a historic performance Saturday afternoon against La Salle, registering new single-game program records for points and goals en route to a 19-9 road victory for the Bonnies women's lacrosse team.

With a total of 11 points coming from nine goals and two assists, Piper further cemented her name into Bona's record books. She bested the previous program record of 10 points in a single game which was held in a three-way tie by Destinee Johnson (2019 at Kent State), Katelyn Faas (2006 vs. Niagara) and Brenna Houghton (2008 at Marist). She also finished with the program's single-game goals record, which she already held at a mark of eight posted last year at VCU, along with Tracy Domm who accomplished the feat in 2002 vs. Le Moyne and Katelyn Faas who netted eight scores in 2006 vs. Niagara.

Piper's nine goals are the most in a single game by any Atlantic 10 player since 2023 and tie the most by any Division I player this spring.

Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Gracie Williams added another strong scoring threat as she set a personal single-game record with five goals.

The Bonnies (9-7, 5-3 A-10) have clinched their Atlantic 10 Tournament bid and will return to the postseason later this month.

St. Bonaventure commanded the flow of the game wire-to-wire and never trailed, blowing the game open in the second half after a first stanza in which the Explorers (3-13, 0-8 A-10) would not back down.

Piper wasted no time getting started as she capitalized on the Bonnies' first possession with an unassisted goal. La Salle's Delaney Staples responded with a score shortly after, putting the hosts at what would be their closest margin for the remainder of the game as they were unable to ever tie the game again.

SBU then rattled off a trio of goals which included Piper's second score as well as tallies from senior Grace Hollenbeck and freshman Gracie Williams, moving the score to 4-1 in favor of the visitors.

From that point on until halftime, the teams would trade pairs of goals back and forth. After two La Salle scores closed the first quarter, Piper and Williams found repeated success to respond, re-establishing a three-goal advantage.

Piper scored her fourth and the final goal of the first half with just three seconds to go before the buzzer, dodging before reversing course with a spin move and firing. That tally set the visitors up with an 8-5 lead coming out of the break.

The third period was all Bonaventure's as the Bonnies scored four goals and allowed just one. In that stretch, Piper notched her fifth and sixth scores while sophomore Sidney Van Tassel completed a hat trick, sending the contest to the fourth quarter with the Bonnies leading, 12-6.

SBU kept its momentum alive and well through the fourth quarter, overwhelming La Salle beyond the point of a comeback with seven goals in those 15 minutes. Piper and Williams each scored three goals apiece and senior Rylee Gonzalez added the cherry on top with her first tally of the day.

Sophomore goalkeeper Judy Mahoney backed up the Bonnies' dominating performance with six saves in a full 60 minutes of action in between the posts.

GAME NOTES
  • Piper had a shooting percentage of over 81 percent after taking 11 total shots. Only four other players in Division I have tallied nine goals in a game this year: Lauryn Warfield of Austean Peay, Brooke Molchanoff of Mount St. Mary's, Aubrey McMahon of Colgate and Emma Blloshmi of Binghamton.
  • Sophomore Sidney Van Tassel tallied a hat trick, adding seven draw controls, a caused turnover and a groundball.
  • Seniors Rylee Gonzalez and Grace Hollenbeck posted identical scoring stat lines with a goal and two assists each. Hollenbeck added three groundballs and a caused turnover.
  • Freshman defender Brooke Owens led the team in both caused turnovers and groundballs, notching four of each.
  • The Bonnies dominated at the draw control circle, winning 21 to the Explorers' eight. Senior Megan Schillinger paced the team with nine draw controls and finished the day with 299 for her career.
  • SBU was extremely successful when clearing, only failing once out of 20 attempts. La Salle mustered 15 successful clears out of 17 attempts.
  • Bonaventure outshot La Salle, 43-27. It marked the first time the Bonnies have taken 40 or more shots in a game since last season's meeting with George Mason (4/9/25).
  • The Bonnies caused 10 turnovers while the Explorers caused only six.

I would like to give a special congratulations to Brooke Piper on breaking two program records. It's an incredible accomplishment and a reflection of the work she puts in every single day. This was a great team win and an even greater day for our program as a whole."
