James Tosses Complete Game Shutout As Bonnies Capture Opener vs. GW

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Senior right-hander David James twirled a complete game shutout and received ample run support from the offense as St. Bonaventure dominated George Washington, 11-0, in the opener of an Atlantic 10 series Thursday afternoon at Handler Park.

James struck out six, walked one and scattered five singles while keeping GW hitters off balance all game.

SBU recorded 14 hits, led by a 4-for-5 day at the plate along with three stolen bases and four runs scored by leadoff man Chris Hoalcraft. Joey Calabretti had three hits while Manuel Castro and Antonio Cordeiro each had two.

The Bonnies jumped on the board in the first on a run-scoring infield single from Cordeiro.

After playing small ball in the first, the Bonnies turned to the long ball in the second as Calabretti slammed his fourth home run of the year directly over the 402 sign in straightaway centerfield for a 2-0 edge.

Bona's broke things open in the fifth, scoring four times.

A wild pitch allowed SBU's third run to come home before Christian LaMothe punched an RBI single to right for a 4-0 score. Later in the frame, Ashton Ross worked a walk after battling through a nine-pitch at-bat to force home a run with the bases loaded. A passed ball completed the Bona uprising.

Hoalcraft plated two more with a triple into the right field corner in the seventh, followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of Castro.

In the ninth, James capped off the impressive day on the hill by racing into foul ground and diving backward to make a catch near the Bonnies dugout for the final out of the game.

The win snapped a 13-game losing skid vs. GW with the first victory for the Bonnies against the Revolutionaries since 2018.
